I've responded to a few threads recently about the Callaway Honker I had Tony's Corvette shop put in my Z and I thought I'd post up a couple of pics for those who haven't seen one installed. I still love the extra power and the stock appearance.

I'll pass along your comments to the tech at Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg. I was going to do it myself but I've got too many thumbs. I edited my first post to reflect the fact that I didn't do it myself.
Looking good bud!!! What are the expected numbers (hp & tq)? I am thinkng of switching from the Halltech to that or the Varam. Also did the radiator shroud have to be modified?
I wonder if the corrugated part of the intake (the wavy plastic) is losing some power, compared to a smoother one? Anyone have an idea if that part can be replaced with a non corrugated piece?

The inside of that piece is pretty smooth. I think I recall that that piece was made like that to be allowed to flex a little bit more.
That is the only CAI that I would buy for my own car, and I might do so one day. Did you also get a tune at the same time, or are your "seat of the pants" impressions for just the Honker with no tuning? Thanks, and congratulations on the new mod!
The rad shroud is cut. It has to be to get access to the relatively cold air coming up from underneath.
Thanks for the compliments. I do drive the Z. Just not in the rain - or after the rain - or if the forecast says rain. I also use Zaino on the paint and Aerospace 303 Protectant under the hood.
I haven't had the tune done yet. Tony actually advised me to wait until I had my headers done. He didn't think the tune would wring out enough additional HP to make the dyno charge pay off. I'm hoping to get close to 390 or so at the RW with the headers added to the Honker.
I USED to win trophies but then some of the guys around here without kids in college blew by me with their show-mod money.
Great looking install and car. I did the install myself on my 04 z06 here in NOVA. I think the few hundred bucks you spent for the install is well worth it considering the time I spent on my on own project, unless you really like working on cars. Dealing with that radiator shroud is a hassle. The Callaway intake is top quality.
I haven't been out to Tony's but have heard good things. Are you getting your headers done there also?
I don't know if I'm going to have them done there or not yet. Tony is thorough and VERY good but his header package is a bit pricey for me. I'm hearing good things about the American Racing pipes and I just may be up to doing it myself on my neighbors four post lift this fall.

The accordion shape of the coupler allows for motion and vibration of the engine relative to the rest of the car. This way, none of the intake system parts could be damaged by stresses from the normally moving engine. In order to maximize flow through this type of coupler, our engineers designed the inner surface of the coupler to be much smoother and less "corrugated" than the outer surface.
During development, we tested the flow characteristics of this coupler design, comparing it to a smooth cylindrical tube with the same crosssection, and found very little difference.

On a completely stock, freshened '01 LS1 on the engine dyno, we measured 17.8 hp (SAE-corrected).
The radiator shroud has to be modified, but Callaway gives you a template to cut on the dotted line and also provides the proper drill bit for the base mounting rivets. If you ever have to return to stock, the OEM shroud costs less than $40 from any Chevy dealer parts dept.
The article below is from Vette Magazine and reports on an intake swap performed by MTI in Georgia. This was a completely independent test; Callaway had nothing to do with it. MTI replaced a Blackwing with a Honker and picked up 19.5 hp at the wheels, then did some tuning and gained another 12.8 hp (32.3 hp - total gain over another aftermarket system). By the way, you don't necessarily have to do any tuning.
I've heard some people install a screen at the bottom of this area to prevent debris from accumulating, but we haven't seen a need to do that with the Callaway Corvettes we build. It's personal preference more than a technical requirement.
I have read on this forum that some members had concerns about "hydrolock" when driving through deep water but that was with the Vararam which draws its cold air down low near the foglight shrouds. In looking closely at the Honker it's a LONG way from the intake to where water would reach. The debris issue is a real one and the reason I've ordered the metal screen that prevents shopping bags and other light debris from being sucked into the area under the radiator.
