Several weeks ago I over filled my gas tank, and yes some spilled on the ground! When I parked the car in the garage I notice a "Strong" gas fumes odor. However, after filling up my tank twice I still smell gas fumes. I have check for leaks in my fuel lines under the hood and the gas tank and couldn't see any indications of a gas leak.
the fuel filter is up behind the driver - they can cause fumes if their connections get loose over time. Also I have seen the gaskets on the sender units leak.
I don't know about your year, but I know people of later models have had gas tanks replaced due to small leaks when full. I hope that's not it because it's expensive.
My 04 coupe is in the Chevy dealership garage at this time. The fuel tank has a split in it at the seam. I have been told they will have to remove the transmission to take the tank off and replace. It was a sad day, but it has to be fixed.
Followup on my gas tank leak. It appears that my leak was in the top of the tank. I have been lead to believe that when they inserted the gas lines into the tank when manufactered they put it into a bind causing it to enventualy fail. It has been two weeks today and I have been told that there is not another tank available and they are having to manufactor a new one. The tank that failed is the one on the drivers side. They do have to remove the transmission to replace it. I think they found the tank failure with pressure test.
