To the new owner of a C5 who wanted to do his own oil change. It is important that the back of the car be at least 3" higher than the front when it is drained or you will leave about a Qt of dirty oil in the motor. Even worse, when you refill with the listed amount, the motor will now be over full which can do damage on start up. Also when you change the filter it should be pre charged with oil to prevent a dry start up.
Don't think so much, changing the oil on a vette is no different than any other car. You can get a little more oil out by lifting the rear a little more, but even then a some oil will always be left in the engine in any car unless you want to tear down the engine for every oil change. Most people change their oil way before you would have to anyways, so the little bit of oil left in there isn't going to hurt anything, especially after it's diluted in the new oil. As far as filling it, I put in 6qts and check the level, then usually add 1 more qt. As for you concern for over filling it. GM recomends adding an extra qt for track days to help prevent oil starvation, so if you do end up with a little extra, no big deal as long as it's not so full that the crank is hitting the oil.
