I went to have my car inspected and they were all sitting around with no work. Good time for a quick oil change. All they had was Shell 5W-30 synthetic, so I said go ahead. Any issues using it instead of Mobil 1?
Well....I didn't think it would be that big of a deal. Now I see the oil is supposed to meet the GM4718M Standard. According to the Shell data sheet, it meets the GM6094M specification.
I've done a search and can't find squat about either one.
I get 75 pages in my manual that tells me how to strap a kid in a carseat. I get 2 lines about this oil standard thing. GM's website gives me this after a search for an answer..."Sorry. No results were found for standard gm4718m. Please check your spelling or use another term and try again." regardless of how I phrase it. I just want to know what the hell it is, spelled out in plain english!!!
Yep. In fact Shell Synthetic is the oil that is used by Village Chevrolet in Wayzata, Minnesota, when they performed an oil change for the previous owner of my 2000, A4 coupe.
