I want to black out my tailights.. Should I buy a kit that comes with black outs or should I paint the lenses?? Anyone do this? I'm thinking about blacking the calipers too.. Whats the law in Florida about this?
I've had both. I just finished up NiteShading my tail lights and I like it better than the covers. Don't let anyone kid you, they still show plenty of light and they are tinted pretty dark.
If you're interested I'm probably going to sell the tail light covers along with the back up light covers. They have only been on the car for a few months, but I'm still using the third brake light.
If you get rear ended and the cop doing the report puts on his report you have blacked out tailight/brake light lenses on any car in any state your insurance aint gonna cover you one bit on the accident and the person that rear ended you for whatever reason should be smart enough to say he couldnt see the lights or brake lights because of it and be calling the first attorney that comes to mind cause I sure would be.
But if your gonna paint the lenses, paint the headlights lenses also to match....
I've been stopped dozens of times with nite shaded tail lights on numerous cars, and never one word about them. I see more light through them than the covers allowed. Go read thru your laws and you'll find that lights need to be seen from a certain distance away.
Besides all of this, I don't think the poster asked for YOUR opinion on the subject.

As long as your lights can be seen from the secified distance, then they are still legal. If the idiot behind you couldnt see a 3,000lb car, then that guy is the stupid one. They have to be able to prove that your lights cannot be seen from a specified distance.

I suggest you go study up on the laws before making your statements online pertaining to vehicle codes/laws. When it comes to blacking out with smoked or dark colors over existing lenses, most states list this as illegal just as is smoked covers over existing headlights AND license plates. Doesnt matter how far away you can see them or how much light is going through them.
Just cause a cop didnt ticket you for it doesnt mean its not illegal.

***STATE LAW in OHIO***
Every motor vehicle, trackless trolley, trailer, semi-trailer, pole trailer, or vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a train of vehicles shall be equipped with at least one tail light mounted on the rear which, when lighted, shall emit a red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear, provided that in the case of a train of vehicles only the tail light on the rearmost vehicle need be visible from the distance specified.
You need to stop reading the labels on the cans of paint, and start reading a book.
Besides the fact than 99.99999% of the time the person doing the rear ending is at fault. If your tail lights are out because of a blown fuse, or bad bulbs, etc..They are still at fault. I have blacked out tail lights on my 240sx and I can see them in the day time from a block away
Back to the question at hand ...... I think I would consider going with spraying the lens with a blackout kit. Start on only one lense and apply a light coat. Install the lense and see how you like the look. Apply additional coats until you reach the look you want.
