Last week we had a poll asking how much people have spent modding thier C5's and I was surprised to see lots of cars between $50-$75,000 and quite a few over $100,000.
:
Why are you surprised? Your poll asked to include the purchase price. I bought my 04 coupe new. I have added a little over 4k in mods which is not that significant. However, that puts me over the 50k threshold. A loaded 50th vert purchased in a high tax state would be pushing 75k if you added a VE interior and exhaust.
When i bought my car, in no way would i have ever imagined by the age of 21, i've have 40,000+ in receipts in my car. Yes, I wish i had invested 40k in my future. But such is life. I never forsaw so many mods, and parts involved.
However, had i bought a more expensive car, i would have still had to mod it.
But im a year younger, anda bout 5 grand more in, but the Government is paying for my futire weather i want to or not

Just adding another perspective.
This poll covers cars from 97-04. The most any of these cars cost new is around $45K give or take. Some of the older ones were purchased in the teens. That's why I'm surprised.
In any case 100K for a Vette is double the original purchase price and then some.
We have spent a lot of $$$ on mods. But when I am at the track and see the Ferrari or the Porsche Turbo in front of me getting 'blue-flagged', which means the car behind you (which is me) is much faster (in the corners & straights)...well that feeling I get is PRICELESS!
Or when I follow crotch-rockets through the mtns and at the end they say, "How-the-hell did you stay with us?"
This (modded) car has brought us so much excitement...you cannot put a value on that.
I like this post...similar experiences...bottom line C5 is respectable chassis for the price, put more capability in it, watch out.

And that doesn't even include the two bunny suits!

Nope. For me, the journey is the adventure, not the destination.
NO!!!!! It was like an obsession. Wanted to be different than other Torch red coupes, one thing led to another. Wish I had the cash to get a C6 Z06. It has been fun getting to this point. But hey, you only live once.
That is why I am in the "10 step program" for C5 owners.... I am trying to head it off at the pass...
The sad part is that all the "mods" do is make the car less drivable, less valuable, and less beautiful. Chevrolet got it right the first time.
Amen. Personally speaking, when I looked for my 1st car this year (used- obviously), any significant mod's turned me off. You never know what somebody could have screwed up. I have to believe that most people "in the market" would think similarly,
Also, as a Financaial Planner, I can only imagine how much better off tuners would be if they actually invested their money. BUT, everyone needs a hobby!!!
With all the variety of sports cars I have owned, this Vette I have now is really the first car modified. Within three years of owning each new sports car, I would get bored with it and want something different. But when you get into the fun of being different and making it what you like, all of a sudden three years have gone by with this car and I have no interest in getting rid of it. It is exactly what I like and proud to show it off. Yes, it is modified quite a bit with allot of $$$ spent. But, when I stand back just to admire how happy it makes me, I know it is all worth every penney. And to me, the picture tells the story...

I keep chasing my tail also. Shortie headers installed..removed for long tube headers, LS6 intake installed...removed for a FAST intake...3:15s installed...removed for 3:42s.
So I know the feeling...of MOD fever
Hey Sleeper C5,
I know the feeling. And I would like to avoid back tracking myself, so I try to do a mod that I know I'll absolutely want and wont have to change it. But then................. I've seen me doing what you've done. Going from one exhaust to another, and then another.. and so on... Yeah, I know how mod fever is. Sometimes its really crazy...
But to answer the original poster: IF I had the kinda money to buy the new C6 Z06, I would. Yeah sure, I'd mod it too. But then, with very few mods I'd be hitting 600+ rwhp ...Sweeeet. Or just get a used Ferrari.... hummm.. STOP it, you making me crazy. You know the best car in the world is still C5. I saw a Ford GT on a trailer today, and a 427 Cobra also on another trailer. They looked nice. But later I saw a really lowered White C5 driving smoothly, with wide bling wheels........that car just made me drool.. C5 is the BEST (IMHO)

Oh..forgot that one. Went from Borlas to ZO6 Ti because of the drone with the Borla Stinger Quads
I did so with the knowledge they would not be a 'saving' account, but in fact would lose value quicker than the stock market in the later '90's, early 00's
I have not regretted the expenditure.
I had considered the C6 (and after owning one, which GM finally took back, they weren't worth it) - thus the money spent on the C5's was well spent.
The Verts show, drive, and get more attention than the C6.
In addition - I love it when the C6 'boys' want to play.
They only do so once
I went with Moding the C5 intead of buying the C6 because I love the looks of the C5 and have won plaques at the local Corvette car shows . I too can keepup and/or run over a stock C6 or a stock C5 ZO6 with the MODs I have.
