I drove up in my C5 coupe at a dealer once and was told that they didn't allow people to even get in their cars because they didn't want people wearing out the seats!
You never know what to expect with dealerships. I went to my local gm dealership a few years back looking to test drive a firebird/trans am and the guy tells me to follow him inside so we can get the keys. I followed him in only to have a credit app shoved in my face. I told him I was still in research mode and had no intentions on filing out a credit app. I told him I was insulted that he thought I couldn't afford the car and walked out. He literally ran out after me with keys and hand and we went for a drive. The speedometer broke as the sales guy drove the car off the lot! Needless to say I did not buy from them but made it a point to return after I bought my new fully loaded Z28 off the showroom floor at another dealership and waved hello. Fast forward a few years. The same dealership let me take my vert for the day to see how I would enjoy the car without asking for more than a copy of my insurance and dl. Go figure.
Maybe the ones you've been in won't, but I have a hard time not kicking the rear end out on my 98 coupe whenever I get on it even just a little, and that's during the 1-2 shift. Of course, there have been a few upgrades made to it...
Definately look around and see if you can drive a 6 speed, but having wanted a manual and ended up in an auto, I can tell you that you won't be dissapointed either way!
Sucks that you had to deal with a dealer that doesn't know how to treat (or even recognize) a good consumer when they come in.
Went to my local Dealer Henderson Chevrolet a couple of weeks ago. I bought my 2004 CLE new from them 2 years ago. I had also purchased 2 other vehicles from this dealer in the past couple of years.
I go in tell them I might be interested in a C6. I'd like to drive it and decide. They asked if I be making the deal today if I liked it. I honestly let them know that if I like it I'll think about it a couple of days then come back in a make the deal.
They had about 6 C6's on the floor. They say OK they'll move a couple of cars out of the way and we'll go for a ride.
So I wait around for about 1/2 hour for these bozos then the guy comes back and tells me if I'm not going to buy today then I cannot test drive it.
Before I bought my 2004 the saleman tossed me the keys and said take it and show your wife a bring it back in an hour or so and see how you like it.
I say WTF you've got plenty of them and I'm the only customer on the entire lot. I remind them I bought to 2004 that's sitting in front from them etc.
The guy trys to give me some BS about "Corvette Drivers" not wanting to buy a car that someone else has test driven.
I let the guy know that's a load of sh** and head out. On the way out the sale manager walks up give me his card and say "let us know when you ready to buy and well give you a good deal"
I turn around and tell this moron "are you out of your fu****g mind?" Do you really think I would ever buy anything from you?" I said if I decide to buy a C6 or more likely a C6 ZO6 I'll go to California or Arizona to buy it. What an ***.

BTW I'm 55 not some kid looking for a joy ride.
Must be a Vegas Dealer thing
I had problems with Bill Heard Chevrolet when I bought the Vert
At least I got a test drive. It was when I paid the cash that the problems with delivery started
...
I really want to find out if the manual is for me or should I buy the auto.
Hi.
I noticed you're in Williamsburg.
I don't want to drop names... But I can think of two or three corvetteforum members from there that would probably be willing to let you try a M6 out. I've got an Auto, myself, or I'd let you drive mine...
Try going to the SouthEast regional section here on the forum and put the string [RATPAK} in the title of a post. Tell the story and ask if anybody here can help you out.
The Ratpack is a group of vette owners from the Hampton Roads / Va. Middle Penninsula area. Putting that in the title of the thread will get our attention.
Also, you might want to go ahead and read any other threads there with RATPACK in the title since they will be referring to people in your area. We are actually quite active as a group and get together at least once a month.
Was out one day and stopped in a Chevy dealer driving my Dodge Dakota and wearing work clothes. They had a 04 Blue vert on the showroom floor. Salesman asked if he could help me and I said sure, can I see inside the vert. He went to get the keys and comes back 15 minutes later. Said one of the other salesman must have the keys because he can't find them. 2 weeks later I stop again, this time in my 90 coupe and clean clothes. 2 saleman are falling over each other to help me. Keys to that car were in my hands in less then 2 minutes. They even wanted to pull it outside and let me drive it. I told them what happened 2 weeks earlier and they were still looking at each other as I drive my vette away.
I would call all of my friends and ask them to call the dealership and ask if they let potential customers test drive their cars. After a few days of this, they might get the message. I have been brought a new car on several occasions and told to drive it over the weekend.
I thought the same thing was going to happen to me this April. I went to a Chevy dealership in a town 20 miles away to look at a '99 triple black 'vert that they had on eBay. The car was on the showroom floor, when I inquired about a test drive, the salesman said that unless we agreed on a price and I 'committed' to buying it right then, they wouldn't move cars around to get it off the floor. I started to leave, but then on a whim asked the salesman if they had a C5 outside that I could drive, because I'd never driven one before (the truth!) He said sure, hold on a minute, went out back somewhere and drove around in an '04 coupe with 3k miles on it, and let me drive it for about half an hour. I didn't buy the '99 vert (had 46k on it, decided I wanted to look for less miles), but that's where I go for service and parts!
This thread only reinforces my opinion of stealerships. There are far too many Vettes for sale from private owners that will be more than happy to let you drive it before you buy. Please post the dealership. Maybe you'll save someone the trouble of dealing with them.
