Default serious tire wear problem

i have 30k miles on my 02 coupe. I still have the original tires and i bought the car 4 to 5 months ago and the front tires were in really good shape. I recently checked them and the outside and inside tread is completely gone. belts showing through on one. the inside tread is perfect and the tire pressure has been between 28 to 30 the whole tire. is this just an alignment problem???????

That is a classic case of tire wear due to underinflation.

I take this back, after re-reading your post, got confused with the use of inside twice... sounds like under inflation to me too. basically, the opposite of overinflation where the centers wear too quickly

I keep mine between 32 and 35 psi. The tires ride a bit harder but last longer. Being the thrifty type, I put up with the ride.

If I'm not mistaken, that 30 psi is the cold temp. If you're driving around for a while and check your pressures on the DIC and it shows just 30, then you're underinflated. Regardless, an inside AND outside tread wear without similar wear in the center is indicative of underinflation.

My back OEM tires gave me 16,000 miles of life. Believe me if you can get 30,000 miles out of "Y"-rated tires, you are doing well. Now get rid of them and get some REAL tires (non-runflats, that is)!

I'm a little confused, you said inside and outside tread is trashed on both tires, then you mention the inside tread is perfect ? By that last statement you mean the center tread area of each tire ?

If each tires inside and outside tread are worn, sound like underflated. Either way, with cords coming thru your due for new rubber, so you might as well have a four wheel alignment done.

Since you just got the car a few months ago, get an alignment done at a good, reputable alignment shop. DON'T go to the ones that are convenient; I went through five shops before I found one that was really good (and darn it, he just retired! ).

The latest shop I've used is about 45 minutes from my house, but it's worth it to get the alignment done right.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Tread wear on both the inside and outside of a tire indicates under inflation. Tread wear on either the inside or outside of both tires (front only-rears are adjusted individually) indicates a toe angle, and tread wear on the inside or outside of only one tire indicates a camber angle.

So it sounds like they have been under inflated, but you may also have a toe angle out of spec if there is excessive wear on either side of both tires.
