[Z06] Need new Rotors
The slotted rotors do still help these days with pad fade which is caused by the outgassing of the binder material of todays pads. Yes they do wear the pads a little faster, but pads are cheap, new underwear needed after pressing the brake pedal hard at the end of a long straight and nothing happening, Priceless.
I totaly agree with you about drilled rotors and I would never consider them. As far as the 8 lbs lighter, I believe that the 8 lbs is an "upto" spec which we all know can mean anywhere from heavier to 8 lbs lighter. My buddy did actualy weigh them against stock rotors and told me they were 5 lbs lighter than stock fronts. One other thing to consider when buying rotors is balance. For my Dodge Magnum, I bought cheap rotors, made in china. After I changed the rotors and the pads, I felt a vibration at high speed. I thought it was that the rotors had high spots but the vibration didn't increase under breaking. I took them to my shop and miked them and they seemed fine. I threw them on a lathe to indicate them and could see just by looking that the rotor was way out in the radial direction. Obviuosly the core had shifted in the casting process. I returned them ( which wasn't easy since I couldn't bring my lathe to show the run out) and got a set of Raybestos rotors. A lot more expensive than the chinese junk, but I don't like junk at any price.
As far as gas release - I thought that went away with asbestos brakes. The new Ferro-Carbon do not see any advantage with gas release. I could be wrong with this assumption though. I just thought I read that somewhere. Maybe someone could confirm or deny before I spread rumors
Of course we all know cooling is the most important. Adding Ducts to the front brakes makes a huge difference at keeping the rotors cool.
