Sounds like BS to me. If they have tires with marked flaws, they are there for a reason. The older I get the more I learn and the more I believe there are no bargains in life. You get what you pay for. If you'd gone to the GY store, you wouldn't have waisted the time inspecting the inventory.
Nothing could be more true than that fact of life... only once in a blue moon do you get more than your moneys worth.
As for the GY store...forget it...the 2 in my town won't even touch a vette, if I didn't have free tires for life from the dealer I would never buy another GY tire again...well in fact I wont since I don't have to pay for them the dealer does.

That is one place I would NOT go to to buy tires, primarily because of the high cost. I've been buying tires for over 25 years and have never had a "blem" problem with Goodyears, from the Tirerack or otherwise. I think it is unfair to generalize Goodyear as being a shoddy manufacturer just because of the experience of one person out of tens of thousands of people who buy Goodyears and have no problems.
Michelins have historically been good tires, but have also ALWAYS been one of the highest-priced tires made. Like all tire manufacturers, they have their own quality problems from time to time.
The GSD3s are at the top of the ladder when it comes to performance tires. One bad retailer shouldn't tarnish that fact.
I would not be too quick to blame GY.
GY makes Millions of tires from hundreds of molds...as the molds get older they do not produce the same optical quality of tire, There are many wholesale tire suppliers out there who will buy these less than optically perfect tires... they still carry the same warranty and are as safe.
How Tire rack "they Know tires" got a hold of these tires and pushed them off as first run tires is beyond me. Obviously they have been doing this for a while because everyone at the warehouse in question knew about this condition and how to deal with an unhappy customer.
Go to as regular Good Year Store, and you will never see this.. It's the policy of the tire store as to what level tire they purchase. Discount tire stores may accept an optically imperfect tire, when available to offset their deep discounts...

Wouldn't it just be better to buy a tire that wasn't defective to start with? Doesn't say much for Goodyear's quality control. I've been buying tires for longer than I can remember, and I have never had that kind of issue with any tire I've ever bought. Then again - I can honestly say that I have never bought a set of aftermarket Goodyear tires, either.
My Michelin PS2's balanced without shaving a chunk off the tread.
I hate it that the PS2's are so damnnnn expensive, but you get what you paid for...
I was having a converstation with my local shop while they were balancing the PS2's and mentioned to him how much better they were in the rain, he said that GY is way far behind on their compounds compared to Michelin, and thats part of the reason the tire stays stuck to the road in the rain.
It would be nice if some other company made a tire that was QUIET, cost effective, and didnt hydro all over the place, the PS2 needs MORE competition than it has... maybe then it'll get cheaper!
Like it was said before..... You get what you paid for.
"Discount" is discounted for a reason..... Sheer volume alone cannot guarantee profits for those outlets, they need get "B" stock tires, to make up for the deep discounts they offer.
My problem with some of those outlets are when they try to pass off those less than perfect items, as "A" stock quality.
I bought my PS2's from the Tire Rack and didn't have a problem with them and you can bet I looked them over really well, before I had them mounted...... I'm lucky though, that, and Michelin makes a better tire to start with.
I have bought 2 sets of GSD3's and mine have been perfect
I got my Goodyear GS-D3 from Tire Rack out of Shreveport La. 2-275/40/17 and 2-295/35/18.No problems at all.Much smoother, quieter, better that the run flats.
I bought Miklen Pilot Sports from Tire Rack about two years ago. After about 1000 miles I had a sidewall defect. The sidewall just split. There was no damage arround the split on the inside at all, and none on the outside. Tire Rack gave me static on the tire because they said it had no road damage coverage.
I had saved my warranty from the installation. I looked up the tires on the website and they listed a road hazzard warranty. The paperwork I had said the tires carried a road hazzard warranty for life. I had to badger Tire Rack forever to get it honored. Then it took forever to get my money back on the replacement tire I bought from them while we fought about it.
I'll never go back again.
ZOOOM
I purchased the GS D3's for my vette and am very happy with them. I bought them from a Goodyear dealer.
I also have Goodyear triple treads for my daily driver and find them to be fantastic tires, no issues in a monsoon rain storm. I switched my winter car from Eagle GT,s to Firestone firehawks and find them to be OK but not as good at high speed corners. The eagles were good at cornering when warm but when the weather got below 5 degrees they were like riding and stopping with rocks.

I guess the tire installers are great chemists as well! Always research before believing a statement by a guy who makes $7.00 an hour!
The statement about tire compound is incredibly false on all counts. In fact, the best Michelin tires could place only fourth in a recent supertire test by Car & Driver. Overall, the Goodyears were superior to the competition on wet roads and were within a cat's hair of tying for first place on dry pavement. As Evil Twin mentioned, Goodyear makes millions of tires every year. Assuming that all are defective because of one report is just plain insane.

My GY dealer will match Tirerack price so I will just get them through GY.
