Im new to the forum, I did some searching on your great forums and would like some more personalized feedback.
I am building a (gasp) non corvette. Therefore this isnt a corvette specific question, but more of a transmission ?
The car will have about 650 crank HP with only 450-500 TQ.
The motor is turbo and I understand for some reason that they have different requirements when building a transmission vs a NA motor.
There are currently adapters to mate TH400's to this motor.
In lieu of the 400 I would like to have overdrive and I dont want to use the gearvendors OD kit.
Im currently looking at the 4L60's. Can these transmissions actually hold the power that the tranny builders claim ? How about the 4L80's
Im looking for real world experience, not my brothers uncle has a sister etc....
The 4l60's can be built to sustain a good amount of power. Give Rodney at RPM transmisison a call, he'll have all the information you need. I put a 700r4 in my firebird, a few years back.
For a second i had 4l80 and 6l80 confused.

Nobody's tried to push the 4l80's So, nobody really knows. however the 4l60's can be built to sustain a good amount of power. Give Rodney at RPM transmisison a call, he'll have all the information you need. I put a 700r4 in my firebird, a few years back.
Tell me your experience with the 700r4. I have heard its a love hate relationship with those. Some people swear by them and others swear at them.
4L60E is a POS. It barely holds up with the stock rwhp and rwtq. You will mostly need a rebuilt 4L60E in the near future. There are several companies here by rebuild the transmission with billet better quality parts. They run abour $3000ish.
Yank makes a TH400 conversion kit, which a couple people here have, up it is very expensive around $10K. I think there is a guy that is running with a Powerglide, but that is about the same price range. As far as I know there is not a 4L80E conversion out there. I would love to have a 4L80E. A built 4L80E can handle 1000 rwhp and rwtq without a problem.

I should have been more clear. I am talking about a built transmission either way.
The motor im using is a japanese motor. So the conversion kits your talking about wouldnt work anyway. The company ross machine racing http://www.rossmachineracing.com/ makes the adapters for this application.
I have to have OD becuase this will be a semi-daily driver.
And what company makes a 4L80 that holds 1000HP ? are you talking about the quadzilla ?

I had a great experience with my 700. We had a few problems in my buddy's S10. But once we found a guy to build it right, that transmission has taken everything we've given it.
Call rodney, i'm sure he could build you a 700 that would handle just about anything you can throw at it.

I had Rodney rebuilt my 4L60 and upgrade it to his stage V package. When it comes to transmissions "he's the man."
