Am I missing anything here – I mean now that push button start has appeared on other cars such as the Toyota Camry, BMW 325 and Baby Benz, it appears that some of the luster has been lost…it’s moved from the high-end exotics to the mainstream in just a couple of years, but why?
So I can start my car without a key, I only have to have a key fob in my pocket….and I get to push a button on the dash rather than turn the key in the dash…I don’t know, call me nostalgic but I thought it was neat when the key location moved from the steering wheel stalk back to the dash where it was back in ’53. I guess with push button start we are going further back in time – what’s next, a hand crank? Just a random thought on this Wednesday morning…...back to work for the man.
Whats easier-walking up to your car with a key fob in your pocket, not having to unlock it, not having to adjust anything, and only having to push a button OR digging in your pocket to find your keys, pushing a button to unlock your car, then putting the key in to turn it on?
I'll take the keyless option
Oh, so my buddy works for a Caddy Dealer, Guy has a new caddy, with one of those key fob things. Dog eats fob, literally. Guy is stuck with non working car, calls tow truck. Tow truck driver comes out, considers the situation, calls the dog over sticks him in the passenger seat, starts car!
Motorcycles have been started via button for years. On my race bikes, the key was often the first thing that's pitched as it isn't needed unless you intend to lock the steering - the voltage on circuit can be wired to a switch in a matter of minutes.

My 96 Vette had the fob that senses your proximity and locked and unlocked the car as you came and went. Thing is as in most houses the kitchen was next to the garage so everytime I went into the kitchen when I was home, I could hear the car unlocking in the garage and locking when I left the kitchen (many times a day) that was kind of annoying. I imagine having your car activate and deactivate all day long as you walk by it, say on a month when you are not even using it seems like a waste and a battery drain.
Another problem I see is if you leave your keys close to the garage, any small kid could get in there and start your car.
Personally I like the "old school" key better. Or a more conservative version as they have in the Honda S 2000, where you still have a key, but you get to start it with a button.
I was driving an STS with the same system last year when my 16 yr old son was driving on his permit. On one outing he grabbed the key fob to drive to a tennis lesson. We get to the place he gets out, I walk around to the drivers side get in and drive off to a Costco down the road.....I come back to the car locked out no fob no keys......

Sends guy off down to the dealer to get new fob.
That's the funniest thing I've heard in a very long time...we just got a new puppy, 7 weeks old pound pup - he'll eat anything, my kids loved the story!

You've made me realize how much better off I would be, I couldn't strain my thumb pushing the button, and I also avoid spraining my wrist twisting the ignition key. On second thought, I'll stick with a key. Less to go wrong.
