I have a friend that just bought a 2004 6 speed. He is having problems downshifting the car. It wont let him shift into some gears. He will be in 5th and when he goes to downshift, he can't downshift into 4th or 3rd. It wants him to shift into 2nd. He does not have problems upshifting, but he does get the upshift light.
I was just doing a search and found that as long as you upshift above 2k RPM then the 1-4 shift isnt an issue. May be why he has had no upshift problems. Could this be that CAGS is still activated on his car?
Anyone else seen downshift issues with CAGS?
CAGS only engages when starting off in 1st gear. It has nothing to do with downshifting.
You mentioned that he just bought the car, he probably needs to get used to how it shifts. Another thought is changing the transmission to fluid to Royal Purple Synchromax makes a big difference in shifting performance as well.
He could by trying to down shift in to high an RPM and or most likley he is just not use to the H gate configuration.
Unfortunitly most ppl down shift and pull the gear lever back ( 3rd to 2nd) or push the leaver forwared ( 4th to 3rd) and hit the gate vs getting into gear.
Do not jam or powershift. the syncro grears need a moment to get up to speed.
When shifting it is almost a two part motion, 3rd, Neutral, 2nd, Not 3rd, 2nd. That 1/10 sec in Neutral will allow the syncros in the trans to match speeds.
Also when down shifting, remeber that the throttle must be 'blipped" or tapped to increase the RPMS 1500 to help match the syncros.
Heel-n-toe shifting.

This should not be a CAGS issue - that is only for upshifting. Going from 5th to 4th should be a nice smooth shift. Either it is an operator problem, or his tranny needs some work.
Greg, obviously some one else should drive the car to determine if it's an operator or a mechanical problem. How about you?
By the way, I frequenty downshift from 5th, even 6th to second when turning a corner - and I don't have to heel & toe or even rev match! Am I good or what!
