Broken Driver's Side Mirror?
Ok, pulled a bonehead move the other day. Was using the CA duster and accidently pulled the wooden handle backwards into the glass of the driver's side mirror. It ended up pushing it in quite far. I (<--bonehead) attempted to push it back out with my fingers after using the electronic control because it wasn't far enough. Used to do this on my old Mountaineer and it came right back. Well, not on the Vette. Ended up cracking the glass.
So, my question is...Can you replace just the glass part of the mirror or do you need to replace the entire mirror? And does anyone know the cost on either of these parts and where I might be able to purchase them?
If you didnn't break any of the tabs that adjust the mirror, as stated above you can replace just the glass. If you did break the adjustor you will need to order the whole mirror assembly, and cover. Don't ask how I know this but reaching for sunglasses and backing out of my garage cost me just under $500.'s.
Yes, you can replace just the mirrror glass. It's about $65 from a GM dealer, and its' fairly easy. It's held in with three small plastic "ball joint" type links. So it just sort of pops out by getting something behind one end of the mirror at a time to SLOWLY & GENTLY pry it out. It does take a fair amount of force to "pop" it out. Once you have it out (or look at the back of the new one) you'll see the little sockets on the back of the mirror that the ball-ends snap into. To install, you simply line the links up with the sockets (actually that part can be a little tricky) and push the mirror into the links until they snap into place. It's a good idea to use a thick towel, folded ever several times, to push on the mirror so as to avoid cracking it with too much pressure at any one point.
Theres also a temporary fix. Walmart sells stick on mirror material which you can cut to shape. If the cracked pieces will sit flat it'll take the stick on piece and tide you over.
