Default help - center console question

hello,

still trying to learn my car (99 coupe a4) while being careful not to break anything.

so here's the question: how far up does the cover of the center console swing up? right now on mine, it just opens up maybe a little less than 45 degrees then it stops. i would think that it should swing up vertical or at least 90 degrees. at the current stop point, it's like pretty locked up but i don't want to force it open any further cause i'm afraid it might break something.

thanks for any info ... ed in northern california

Try a little oil or lithium grease. The top will loosen right up.

THere was a thread about this a few days ago but it got locked up. It is supposedly designed that way as a safety precaution. It is a double hinge, it will open all the way if you pull on it, just takes some getting used to.

To see how far it really goes, release the parking brake, then open all the way. Now, while it's open get a toothpick wet on the end with WD-40 and touch to each of the hinges.

Now you've seen how it does open all the way and wont worry about breaking anything and it's lubed for proper opening and closing without binding.

i have the same problem with mine being new to a c5. once you open it, left entire cover straight up (2 hands at first) then the cover will open completely.

You're right, it should swing to the 90 degree position. If you pull up a little harder and towards the driver side, it should open up the rest of the way. Greasing the hinges may help.

From last weeks "locked up" thread. Members told of just two drops of oil doing the deed. I went out to the car, did my "learned" two hand opening trick, oiled the hinges, closed the lid and WHAM! it opened one handed on the first try and has ever since. I couln't believe it. I've put up with this "two handed trick" for 4 years!" and a couple of microns of 3 in 1 fixed it? I was very impressed to say the least. It pays to read these posts. I'm on a fixed income, but will be sending off my fair share of $ to Corvetteforum in the near future as it has helped me so much in just the last month alone. Thank you Forum Brothers and Sisters.
