Default Thinking hard about a cam....

The title says most of it, here is the rest:

I have easy access to 3 known mod shops:

1) 21 CMC
2) MTI
3) LG

I am looking at cam and oilpump only. (Oh yeah, probably better say I understand that I am looking at springs/retainers as well) Car is BONE stock except for blackwing. I would LOVE to gain close to 100 hp (flywheel) with the swap. I know at one point there were some cams that would get you close. I like lopey idles and this is not a daily driver (she barely has 32K on her at 4.5 years old)

Please provide me with input from your experiences with drivability, power, sound, blah blah blah

Thanks
-Ed

There are alot of small details to a cam swap, including miscellaneous items. The Stock 1.7 ratio stamped rockers can be reused. You don't have to buy a new oil pump if you buy the SLP shim to be placed on the pump bleed-off spring to increase the line pressure.

Some items can be replaced since you are there.

Items to be purchased:
New cam
New chromemoly pushrods.
New springs, retainers and locks.
Double roller timing chain and gears. (for insurance)
New balancer bolt (stock bolt is a one time user)
New front seal in timing cover.
New timing cover gasket

Miscellaneous shop materials to be paid for:
Coolant
Engine assembly lube
loctite (blue and red)
Thread loc (white) for water pump bolts
gasket sealant for front corners of oil pan and timing cover

When I first did my cam swap, it cost me around $1000.00 doing it myself. The miscellaneous items are additional materials that a shop may charge you for in addition.

i dont think you will come close.
you got to at least get headers.

if you went with a G5x3 and some headers it could be close.
cant go wrong with LG or 21st.

Do upgrade your timing chain. However a LS2 chain is plenty tough enough for your needs, and much cheaper. Oh yeah, have LGM tune it for you, too. and throw on a set of their headers.

Wouldn't we all?

You are probably looking at 25 extra HP. The impact is more dramamtic when you have long tubes, which are good for X amount on the stock cam, but even a bit more with an aftermarket cam (Over and above cam only).

That may be a bit confusing, but to simplify with some made up numbers, the headers might be worth 25 HP on its own, and the cam might be worth 25 HP own, but together they are worth 65 HP. Same can be said for cold air intake and any other mods.

do you guys normally get a new oil pump when you do cam swaps? I know the big thing for ls1 guys is to get the LS6 oil pump but I wasnt sure about if you already have an ls6?

I have a MTI X1. It gave a 42rwhp gain over the stock 01 Z06 Cam. I also have LT's, MSD wires, TR-55 plugs and a Haltech Stinger intake. Cam is decent driving, you just have to tune it right. I used their valvetrain kit with it.

I used my stock LS6 oil pump, and it's doing well so far.

You don't have to install a double roller chain. Just go to Thunder Racing and order a JWISS chain. It is just the chain, you use your own sprockets. It's made by Katech and is more then enuff for a head/cam car let alone just a cammed car.

If funds permit, I would get an underdrive balancer.

Your expectations of that much hp is a little high. You will have to add headers and an intake system to approach your goal. With my mods I put down 71rwhp over stock on the same chassis dyno.
Good luck and I hope this helps somehow.

If you want to know about cams go to ls1tech.com This website is brainwashed into buying nothing but lg products. Give texas-speed.com a call and check out their MS3/MS4 cams. Also check out thunderracing.com and take a look at their torquer cams. Then if you want to be a mad man get the T-Rex

I am not saying that LG doesnt sell and do good work. I actually bought their lg pro headers from them and I love them. The company just charges a lot more money than other companies for their products because of the name. I am just throwing out other options for people to try. LG=builds rich mans motor builder Texas-speed=car guy not trying to waste money on a name.

LG does put alot of money into racing, so Lou has an advantage on knowing what works and what doesn't, you have to hand him that. He's broken plenty of parts and you have to break them to find out the fix. I like Texas-speed for sure. I've always got a good deal saving alot of money with them. Case in point: Because my throttlebody is ETC, I needed to purchase the LS2/LS7 90mm throttlebody for my FAST 90. GM wanted $464.00 for the throttlebody Texas-speed's price $264.00, a 44% savings. They also have been excellent on shipping time and delivery also. If something isn't right, they take care of you with no questions asked.

Hey I have to agree on the texas speed. prices are great. Getting ready to buy cam package and headers from them I think the price out the door is close to 1200 for all.

Wow that price is real low. If it is true, I'd go for it.
