how much can i reduce my 1/4 mile e.t. by dropping my tire pressure?
my first time at the track i ran a 13.2 et with my stock 02 z06. i am going again this saturday and want to get into the high 12's. should i run with the traction control off because the car seems so much more stronger in that mode but i get lots of tire spin in the first three gears. thanks

Well John it depends alot on the tires themselves.... are you on a regular (stock style) radial or drag radial???

I found that running my stock F1's at 25-26 psi worked well, I run my drag radials 20-24lbs depending on conditions.

If you are at the track you need to run in competition mode, this will let the tires spin but will only interfere if the car gets really sideways. Pull around the water if you can, back slightly in to wet the tires and then pull up to just past the water and do a burnout (make sure you smoke the tires and get them warm) this will give you the maximum traction on whatever tires you are running.

Stage the car and work on holding the rpms up a bit (try starting off in the 2800-3000 rpm range) and quickly (dont dump it) ride out the clutch and squeeze in the throttle.... this should all be done in about the first 10 feet or so of track. Run each gear to red line and shift quickly, you may have to adjust your 1-2 shift if traction is limited, excess wheel spin on the shift can and will result in loss of ET.

Do a search for "Launch Techniques" by forum member Ranger.... its a very detailed tutorial that should help you improve. Remember that practice is gonna make you faster.

I read those launch techniques a while back {2002 Z06} and I can honestly say I remembered of few things from them that helped me beat two C6 coupes without that much trouble...one was a Z51...mainly I remember the best rpm range to take off in...I had a huge advantage leaving the line..so they are helpful..

I'm not sure what elevation you are at but your times show a lot of room for improvement even if you don't change a thing on the car. Leave the tires at the stock pressures and work on your technique. Your ETs make it sound like you in the 2.4-2.5 60' range. You are giving the car too much power off the line. You should be able to easily pull a 2.1 60' on stock tires with stock air pressure even with the TC on.
