Default Spare Key.

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone out there knows of a good place put one of those hide-a-key setups. I would like to have a spare door key close at hand for those just in case occassions when you lock your key in the car with it running, I almost did that on the weekend. Thanks in advance.

The Monk!

I locked my keys in the car with the engine running once and had to call a locksmith because it was about to rain and the top was down.

Seriously, I didn't think the doors would lock with the key in the ignition. I'll have to try that out.

how about in your wallet...sure would hate to see someone steal your car by finding your hidden key...

Did you forget this is a public forum and that anyone could read that not only you were thinking about doing this, but get likely suggestions about where it might be hidden?

Isn't that a blonde joke?

Monk, I used to use the case you are talking about years ago, But instead now (on everything I drive) I use the little quick disconnect between the key and the fob. The ring with the fob on it also has my house/garage keys together so when I get out of the car (this is a routine you have to establish) I disconnect the fob/house garage keys from the ignition key with the Vette still running, get out, use the fob to lock the car, go to Dunken Donuts or whatever and return allways having the fob. Come to think about it I still have 3 or 4 of the magnetic boxes you refer to stuck to the wall of the garage. One question. Does our key have a chip in it that might be weather sensitive?

Hello, no it's just a copied key with no resister on it so it unlocks the door, but will not start the car. I don't know if the door will lock (via the power locks) with the car running (I should see I if it will), but what happened to me on the weekend was that I switched jackets with the one I had in the trunk ('00 vert) and I put the keys in my pocket, switched coats and almost slammed the trunk (with the keys in the coat in the car that was locked). I caught myself just in time. I do have a quick release and a spare door key on my keychain, but I found out a couple of times with my Mustang that it's always a good idea to have one "hideing" somewhere on the car. The car didn't come with keyfobs either (used).

The Monk!

If the top was down, why not just reach over and unlock the door or shut off the ignition?????????????

Default Spare Key Solution

My solution:part1 small phillips screw driver kept in front plate bracket cover. Part2 spare key wrapped in small plastic bag in a hide a key holder. Unscrew one of the rear tail lites and place hide a key and duct tape it to the frame. Reassemble and put the screw driver in the front bracket space. If needed just lift up the licence plate cover( assume you don't have a front plate) Utilize screw driver to obtain the key behind the rear lite.Simple and cheap and if someone was to find the screw driver would they really know what it is for?? I used it once and was a real life saver..

I'm amazed at how many people are taking you seriously! And, yeah, I believe the car will try to stop you once from locking the door with the key in the ignition and will chime at you, but if you try a second time it will lock.

The rear bumper rail is a good place. if you look really hard you can find where the muffs are bolted on......use you imagination for not using a magnet !!!

I once locked the keys in my car (not the vette though) in a not-so-great part of Tijuana, Mexico, just as it was getting dark. I had no problem breaking my antenna off and fashioning a tool out of that. Quickly...

The 97s came with 3 keys. Two of them had the pellet on them and were attached to key fobs while the third had no pellet and was inside a plastic case with the VIN printed on it. The key could be slid inside the case and inserted in your wallet like a credit card. I don't know how many years they provided the wallet key but I know I did not get one with my 03Z.
