I'm getting ready to take a long drive in my '04 C5 and I think I remember from from previous '02 that when I went to have tires changed, they needed lug nut key (I bought the '02 used) , but when I look at my lug nuts on '04, they look standard, so my question is, are locking lug nuts standard and do I need to get a key before my trip (just in case), or are they an option.
My '02 does not have locking lugs. It's fairly late production, so maybe they switched mid-year....
At some point in the '02 model year, they switched from the short lug nuts with plastic covers to the long chrome ones. Probably dropped the locking ones at that time.
I have an 04 a4 Lemans vert that I purchased from the leasing co. that bought it new. It came with the locking lugs (one per wheel) and the socket in the little plastic bag in the recess in the rear compartment.

They were added to your '04. They are still available over the parts counter. No '03 or '04 had them from the factory.

When i got my car i asked about the locking wheel unit i was told by both the service advisor and the mechanic that if someone wants your wheels, locking nut or not they will get them.So i figured in that case i am not going to buy the darn thing and spend money on something that will not work.

I agree with the SA and mechanic's comment. AntiTheft devices keep honest people honest and slow crooks down. Most crooks don't want to be slowed down so, the locks do reduce somewhat, the crowd wanting your wheels. To not invest in some sort of deterrent is like saying, if a crook wants to break in your house he will, so why bother spending money on door and windows locks.
Cheers

The house is a different story i have an alarm for that and it goes to the police if someone tries to break in but if you are out shopping wheel locks can be undone in seconds by a pro.True story you know the clubs they put on the steering wheels afriend of mine lost the key while shopping called AAA the man came out and took the club off my friends steeringwheel in a second he could not believe it.
Not standard or factory on the 04s. I bought a set for my o4 at the local chevy dealer for about $20. Thieves may look elsewhere for easier pickin's. For that money, I think it is a good investment.
