I've seen the posts on how to do this by removing the radio and all, but someone had briefly mentioned going through the center vent.
Has anyone tried simply removing the center vent to do this? Seems like a far easier method, so long as there's enough room for access and the wiring will reach through the vent.
Mike, the center vent is bolted to the dash cover from the inside, there is a 'hammer/chisel' method where you remove the radio; I remove the cluster and get the switch out that way, this allows access to the release tabs
As a matter of fact I just replaced my hazard flasher today. I pulled the radio and got at it that way. From the radio bay you can use a small screwdriver to release the bottom catch on the flasher unit and it comes out without all that much force from the front. Make sure you have some picks available to help fish it back into place. Not all that bad of a job.

I just bought my replacement switch this week and plan to do this over the weekend. It's been giving me problems for many months! Does the switch come out to the front? towards the back of the car? Looking at the new switch there are two tabs, one on top and another on the bottom. You only have to punch the bottom one? The picks are to work it back into the hole? Won't it just plug back in?
I plan to take pics to document the process since this seems to be such a common problem....

The switch gets pushed out the back of its holder towards the front of the car after you get the lower tab pushed up, back, and sort of loose. Yes the new switch just plugs back in, but it's not the handiest place to get my big mitts in so I needed some help from the picks to line it up before I could plug it back in. It's another one of those areas on the C5 where it would be handy to be an anorexic, double jointed, pigmy.

Nearly fell outta my chair with this little one-liner!!! I happen to be a 5' 11" guy that weighs 230lbs. with the hands of a female pianist - GO FIGURE! But they do make working in "tight places" a snap.
