Most common problem is fading display. It seems easy enough to repair. Mine was a 30mins solder job, just search the forums for details on what needs soldering.
Yes it is the display. I have read that some of the displays just go dim, but the one in my 01 vette has completely gone out. The chevrolet dealership wants about $300 for a new one. That sounds too expensive, but what do I know.
