My gas cap went bad, would not close at all and you could smell gas in the garage when I filled the tank all the way .IT took about 3 weeks before the check engine light came on and its been about a week since I replaced the cap. Wonder how long it will take for the light to clear or is there a way I can clear it?

It will clear after a number of on/off cycles.
But do it yourself.

Thanks ,
Cap was $20.00 and I did not check to see if it was covered under warranty since it was so cheap I didn't feel like the hassle of taking the car in . 33,000 on the car and its a 2004 so I assume it should have been covered.
update:
I replaced the cap last week and filled the car up for the first time yesterday .I went out in the garage a few hours after I parked the car and smell gas , I am thinking now I have a problem with the tank itself. Any one else had a similar problem? I have not bolted anything to the car such as an amp or what not but think I have a leaking tank or something else wrong.I did not see any leaks under the car???????
You could have a very expensive leak in the tank that usually shows up only when full. It is also difficult to find as it only leaks a very small amount. The good news is you are still under warranty. Get this checked out immediately by your dealer.

That s what I was thinking the problem is , and I will fit it in under warrenty ,04 with 33k !
I had the same thing happen to my o4 coupe. The dealer changed the gas cap, and still had the proablem. They run some kind of smoke test and found a crack in the left fuel tank. It took two weeks to get new fuel tank because they had used all the extras they had. Now fixed and I am a happy camper again. They will need to drop your transmission to replace the tank. Paid for under warranty, The bill would have been $1200 had I not had warranty.

Damn , I guess I need to take it in ,hope it does not take 2 weeks in the shop though.
I remember reading a similar post a few months ago. Try doing a search on "gas tank leak" and see if you don't come up with about the same issue. I think the final result was a leak in the tank rather than the gas cap. hopefully the waranty will take car of it. Good luck.

My buddy & I were on our way to Carlisle last summer in his '98 & started smelling gas. It grew worse & forced us to stop at a GMC dealer. Turned out to be the rubber "O" ring in the fuel filter. The gas was leaking directly on the exhaust pipe. One hour & $110.00 later we were on our way.Might be worth checking out.
I had a similiar problem with my gas cap. I never smelt gas, but then again i never kept the car at my primary residence (no room). But I did look like an idiot everytime i had to top-er off because the cap would never 'catch' so i had to keep spinning/jiggling it until it would click. Free replacement when at the dealer for noisey rear
Mine was a DRIPPIING LEAK at the FILTER near the filler pipe. Took about 3 hrs to fix and had to remove bolts on the left muffler.
Plastic fuel clips at the gas filter were deteriorating. Jack it up and look at the fuel filter and the hose going into the left tank. Most likely culprits.:
PS get as FRAM or OEM filter not a WIX which they had at NAPA. Use one that looks EXACTLY like the one you take off.
UPDATE: Took the car in yesterday , the tank is split around the filler the guy told me .They had that fixed late yesterday but I wanted them to check the cooling system as I have smelt anti-freeze a few times at startup , hope the heater coil is not bad but I didn't feel any wet carpet on the passenger side.....
