Default New Battery Time Question

Hey guys,

The positive terminal fell off my battery.
After 4 years of sitting in the garage WITH a Battery Tender on it....
That's right, FELL OFF.

Luckily it was out of the car because it wouldn't crank the car anymore
and I had it on a couple of 2x4's charging it.
Had my Gill Aircraft Battery charging at 2 amps for 21 hours.
Went out next morning and the complete + terminal was laying on the garage floor with the battery charger still fastened to it.
The terminal was corroded INSIDE the battery and the lead terminal simply fell off.
I'm looking for the 'Made In China" sticker on it.

Anyway... QUESTION:
Are you guys replacing with the 34/78 series battery?

It's a little more CA & MCA than the 75/25.....

I don't want to modify ANYTHING on my Z06 to put it in there.

Over the last 11 years the positive battery posts have fell out of two of my Delco batteries. One in my 91 Olds Bravada and one in my 99 Tahoe. The Bravada was the interesting one. I drove into a quick oil change shop and didn't drive out. The vehicle was stranded in their shop and had to be pushed out. Luckily, I was able to get a ride to a parts store and buy a battery.

Other than those two experiences with Delco batteries I have had very good luck with them. The one in wife's Saturn is 8 years old now. The one in my 97 Vette went for 6 years and the one in my current Tahoe is 4 years old. The one in the Tahoe is amazing since I have accidentally totally discharged it (interior lights on and electric cooler running at the track) 5 or 6 times now and it still keeps going.

I have one of the 7 year Delco Gel batteries in my 03 Z06 which I moved from my 97 Vette when I traded cars in 03. It is over 3 years old and still going strong even though the car sits quite a bit through the winter.

Part #2277 Stock GM glass mat, been going since before 9-01.
Ligh weight and no acid worries. Keeps you stock.

The 2277 Delco is what I have (had) now.
This battery hasn't started this car more than 30 times since it was new (car AND battery).
Car has 1,700 miles on it now.
Don't believe I want another one of these.

I've done the search and read all the post about the Optima's.
I have THREE optima Red Tops now and they've all been good.

Think I'm going with the 34/78 series rather than the 75/25.
It's a squosh larger so I'm wondering if you guys have been replacing with that size battery in your Z06's.

They are good battery's. You just have a bad one,I read posts about bad
Optima's all the time, plus, they look butt ugly and are heavy.

I would go OPTIMA. That was one of the first things I did to my Z when I got it. The OPTIMA has a little higher output voltage when cranking and there is no mess on top of the battery that always seems to run down the side of the battery and rust or corrode whatever it touchs. I have OPTIMAs in my T-Bird SC, Excursion diesel and Scarab boat. Never had a problem.

Rock'en, this one was good last month.

It's really not been used as far as battery use goes.
It's had a Battery Tender on it since day one , 24/7.
This is a failure of 'QUALITY' not a battery that just got 'used up'.
That makes a big difference to me in deciding whether a product 'gets my vote' by me purchasing another one or I vote by 'walking' to a different product.

This battery hasn't started the car more than 30 times since it and the car were new.
If I'd left it sit to discharge (or abused it any other way) I'd expect it to go bad.

Example: I have a Duralast battery in my Prelude Si and it set for FIVE years without use. It was TWO years old when I parked the car. Kept a Battery Tender on it. THAT battery is STILL going strong today and I've been driving that car for TWO more years since I pulled it back out of mothballs. That's a NINE year old Duralast battery.
I really didn't expect this type failure of a Delco product so I'm a little dissapointed with it.

Yep, I'm going with the Optima Red.

Here's the answer to my question guys:

I had a 34/78 Series Optima in my 454 Chevy pickup so.....
Took it out today for a trial fit into my Z06.
Fit's like a glove.
It's PERFECT.

So if you want a few more cranking amps, get the 34/78 size battery for your Vette.

NOW, Ive got to go buy my baby a NEW one.
It can't sit around with that old Red Top out of my truck.

Only 'one' slight problem....
This particular Optima battery didn't come with the 'spacer' that you can put under the battery or on top of the battery so...
My red plastic battery cover won't go on there right now.
The NEW one WILL have a cover that can be placed on top to:
1)Cover the unused top post
2)Allow you to use that nice battery cover you bought.
