Default Afternoon Project

I ordered this set of Wilwoods from Tbyrne a couple of weeks ago and got an incredible deal on them. Fast service and very helpful. Thanks to those at Tbyrne. I tried to get them installed yesterday at the local chevy dealer and the tech never showed so I decided to do it myself today. The whole install only took about 4 hours. I put Wilwood stainless lines on as well. I was a little intimidated but the most dificult part was getting car up on jack stands. I strongly recommend this mod to anyone who plans on some track time. I went out on the interstate and ran it up to about 90mph and braked to 70mph about 5 or 6 times to try to break them in a little and it felt very solid. Got off the interstate and came to a stop and had smoke pouring out of the wheels. Nothing wrong, just a few oils and brake fluid burning off. But I'm not saying it didn't worry me for just a sec.

They look impressive. What was the cost of that total package in the pics?

I'm not sure I'm supposed to say due to the huge discount Tbyrne is offering. Give them a call and they will hook you up.

Sorry

Well if the discount was just for you I can understand your apprehension. Same token if they didn't specifically tell you to keep the price quiet, then......why not share with fellow Z owners?

The brake setup was just over $3200 shipped. All said and done it cost me about $3250 installed.

I think the overall weight is a little less but not much. The front rotors even with the aluminum hats are about as heavy as the stock fronts. I think the calipers are lighter than the front stockers but about the same in the rear. I didn't weigh them but having done the install myself those are my reflections.

There was a thread about a month ago and if I remember correctly the savings was around 12 lbs for all 4 rotors. Caliper difference I have no clue.

12 pounds savings, that seems like a lot to me, I'm going to go and try to find that thread. If you can find it first please post it.

also on the c5 general sticky that's titled Weights , ratios, strength etc, there's a list of things to reduce weight. There it states 20 to 30 lbs for aluminum hat rotors, but I think that refers more to the titanium ones

I seriously doubt there is a 12lb difference. Maybe if you left off the rotors and just installed the hats. Then I could see 12lbs.

If you got the aluminum hats, which I'm assuming you did, it could very easily be 2 to 3 lbs per rotor. I've also seen a number of vendors make the same claim.

Aluminum Hats in front but steel hats in back because of the parking brake drum. I would say that there is a 2lb max difference between the fronts. I could be wrong. I'm know trying to make you believe that my two hands can measure differences in weight down to the ounce but I can usually tell a couple of pounds.

That would be about right. My understanding is every pound of unsprung weight is equivelent to 4 pounds of static weight. Using round numbers, if you can save 10 lbs on all 4 rotors it's like saving 40 lbs of static weight. For grins I checked out titanium rotors and the weight savings is almost 40 lbs for all 4, problem is the cost. About 4,000 for a set of 4.

I wish we could have known about your afternoon job before hand, I would have really liked to know what the exact weight difference between the stock "Z06" rotors and those new ones that you bought were. I have looked up the titanium rotors and they are $1,000 each rotor. and the matching calipers are almost a grand a piece too, easily add up to $7-$8 grand for a complete set-up, but with the huge noticable weight difference (documented) they are also claiming a difference in stopping distances of something like:

Stock 60 MPH to zero 135 - 145 feet

Ti set-up 60 MPH to zero 75 - 85 feet

And a lot less heat build up and quicker cooldown,

But that is a lot of cash.

Sorry to get sidetracked on your thread. That is a very nice set-up that you got, and a great price, and it looks killer.
