I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the head mechanics, cousins best friends Uncles step son went to school with someones Fathers nephew whose neighbors daughter was dating this guy who met someone who had owned a 1998 corvette. I think I got the story correct

I went to the salt flats for speed week this August, it's a must do
for anyone that can make it. If you are wondering where all the flathead motors and '53 Studies went that you saw as a kid, you'll find
them there. More strange car and motor combos then you can
think of, a few Vettes also.
I'm from San Francisco Bay Area, 610 miles to the salt, if you live within 1,000 miles you gott'a go. Wendover is a boarder gaming town, no
problem getting a room at anytime of the year.
After one vist you'll want to build a car and get in on the fun.
Its called SPEED. The real conenction is that I saw the article and it reminded me of another speed record help by the Sledgehammer - remember that 1988 White vette with a top speed of 254.5 (http://www.fastcoolcars.com/callaway_sledgehammer.htm)
