Default Its a sad day for me :(

This all started about a week ago on the 27th. I was driving home from christmas on I-5 and I started to hear a weird noise coming out from the front of my corvette. Sort of sounded like someone was sweeping a metal floor with a metal broom, very rythmic. Pulled over, popped the hood and listened closer, figured out the sound was coming from the water pump and thought to myself
"better watch the guages the rest of the way home to make sure it doesnt' quit on me"

Drove back the rest, sound was present the whole time but it never grew louder.

Next day I was worried that something was wrong with it, took it over to valaya motorsports (little plug: awsome guys, everyone in the bay area should pay them a visit with their corvette needs). Ted wasn't in so I spent some time talking to Mario, and he said bring the car in the shop will take a look at it to figure out whats going on. They pull the belt, started the car, and guess what....the noise was still present, ruling out the water pump. Tech said he thought it was the timing chain rubbing, that I would need to have the front of the motor taken apart to get it repaired. Tech also said don't drive it cause if the timing chain does go, then I'm going to have to get my self a new engine.

Take the car right home, park it and don't start it up until I can take it over to Chevy for them to work on it (couldn't have valaya do the work cause of extended waranty).

Drop the car off on friday at Chevy, right before the new years (yea no corvette cruising on new years eve....I was pissed) and started to wait.

I call everyday, two times a day (service advisors love this, actually...he's been really nice to me) with no updates until today.

I finally get a call today with an update....

Its not the timing chain it inside the motor.

engine is getting dropped right now to get pulled completely apart.
$3,000 to try and figure out whats going on with it.

All I can say is, thank god for an extended warranty on a used car. I would recommend EVERYONE who is buying a used corvette, if you have the oppertunity to get an extended warranty DO IT!!!

I'll post an update once they tell me what is wrong with the motor.

Wish me the best
--Conversekidz

p.s. If it turns out they have to replace the motor for whatever reason its going to be atleast another 10 business days with out my car....

I just want my corvette back home where I know its safe

I'm on the fence about getting a GMPP on my 04 z51, or saying the heck with it and mod the living crap out of it!

First of all I hope you get your Vette back soon and in tip top shape. Really stinks not being able to take a New Years Eve cruise.

Secondly I did get the extended warranty on my Vette when I bought it used. I've not had to use it yet, but I consider it some of the best money I've spent on the car. A small price to pay for peace of mind.

Let us know what happened when you get you Vette back.

Thank you for the kinds words GrandpasC502

I'm thankful for the warranty cause that repair number keeps getting bigger and bigger. When this repair is said and done, it will be far greater in cost than I paid for the warranty.

Good luck with repairs. Keep us posted as it goes along. Extended warrenties are a really good thing. I needed mine recently for repairs to the gas overflow pipe - it's good advice to buy one if you can.

I hope it's fixed to your satisfaction. Good thing you had the warranty.

I've been a tech at a dealership for almost 10 years now. I have seen extended warranties save a lot of people a lot of money. It is a good piece of mind when situations like yours arise. Don't worry, many techs such as myself take pride at being doctors for cars and I'm sure your vette will be safe and sound. Just in case though when you pick up your car, go to it with your service advisor and look over it together. Best of luck and hopefully you have it back real soon. Mine has been on jack stands since the beginning of November and won't see the road until April.. Now that's a long time without your vette.. Good luck..

Thank you everyone for the support, i'll post as soon as I find out more about what is going on.

I'm in a bind cause my corvette is my daily driver, and I just sold my 2nd car, so its off to get a rental as soon as they tell me its a warranty claim (can't tell me anything until they have it all figure out they say) but thankfully that warranty covers my rental for 5 days.

Extended warranties can be lifesavers in times like this - glad you got one on the car. Let us know what they find out and what it saved you in repair costs. Good luck.

Bummer! Happy to hear that warranty will cover the expense. Thankfully, we don't hear these stories that often but we're all pulling for a quick and correct repair.

Hope it works out. Make sure to check the car out very closely at the dealership prior to leaving

That was the very problem that made me take out the GMPP. A new LS1 is a pricey item. Just wish I could have kept the cover in England - CONUS only

Best of luck with the fix and the Vette will sound just as good as new very soon.

Get the GMPP warranty and mod it anyway. There are many things that can go wrong and still be covered regardless of if your car is modified. I just repaired my remote locking system under extended warranty even though the car has many changes to it. The driver's door wasn't responding properly to either opening or closing situations with the remote. I had to replace both the entire door lock assembly and the door control module inside the door. It's now fixed and I'm sure the repair would have been several hundred dollars if I had to pay for it.

How many miles on the engine from the original poster?

I've got a zero deduct GMPP for another 9 months, but have already dedided to extend it with another GMPP $50 deductible (the zero deduct isn't available on cars more than 3 years old). This post clinches that decision. Having this warranty and the peace of mind it affords means that I can continue driving my Corvette like a Corvette.
