I want to clean and re-lubricate my Blackwing on the 2000. I have the K&N kit because I have a K&N filter on my 73. I understand the differences in material between the two filters. Beyond the cleaning part, is there any scientific reason why I can't use the K&N spray lubricant on my Blackwing? Afterall, isn't it really the same stuff as the Blackwing lube? I have searched this forum and couldn't come up with a previous post addressing this question.
I use a cleaner like Simple Green to clean my synthetic media Halltech Stinger filter, and K&N oil to lube it. You may want to call the manufacturer, but keep in mind that they normally try to make you think that anything BUT genuine XXX parts will damage your engine, etc, etc. . BTW, I wrote a procedure, complete with pictures, on this web page:
I remember a post about this a while back but I don't recall the reason behind it. I think it had something to do with the chemicals in the K&N lube being different somewhat different than the Blackwing lube. It also had something to do with the type of material the filters are made of. But the end result was that it was not recommended to use the K&N lube on the blackwing filter and vice versa.
It also might change the color of the BLACKWING filter media if that's of concern. The BLACKWING is not the same filtering media as a K&N.
The cleaning solution shouldn't be an issue. I also like to use diluted SIMPLE GREEN when I run out of the "correct" cleaning solution.
For the $20.00, I'd use the filter manufacturers product. I have K&N, S&B and BLACKWING cleaning/oil kits...
I need to clean my Blackwing also. So, whose got the best deal on a recharge kit?
SLP PERFORMANCE PARTS (NJ) is the main distributor of the DONALDSON/BLACKWING air filters.
The oiling kit from them is #25016 for $17.45...you might be able to find it from one of the site vendors such as CORVETTES OF HOUSTON or PFYC if they're closer to you.
