Default Cam ?

I have to take the car to MTI for some codes and thought I would check on cost of cam install. My question is how much can I gain with a streetable cam , and not changing heads? I am about 345 HP right now with the headers and high-flow cats? Also about what is the cost of cam with install?
Thanks for your help.

When I bought mine I was quoted roughly $895 labor. Cam was about $400. I am going to do the install myself (with the help of some more knowledgable foum members) but I was just curious.

What cam did you get and what kind of HP you looking at ?
I was quoted $225.00 to retune, and cam package at $1650.00 . I am waiting to see what kind of gains , if its around 50 gain , I might do it but I dont think it will get me that much ....

Depends on what you thing "streetable" is. A bigger cam like the G5-X2 I'm puttin in my car will make about 430rwhp on a Z06 and probably 390+ on an LS1.

Something smaller kike a 224/224 or 224/228 will make 370ish w/ stock heads?

No clue what install cost is.... doing it myself.

I originally purchased a cam kit that would have given me about 40 HP gain. I didn't have a real sense of what was and wasn't streetable at the time. I sold that kit as a whole and have purchased a LG Motorsports G5X3 cam that is MUCH bigger than the cam I previously had and it claims 50-70 HP gains. Of course all of this comes with the right kind of tune. If you were quoted $225 for a re-tune then that is cheap. Most tuners will charge between $350 and $500 for that. It all depends on what you are looking for as far as streetability is concerned. If you don't mind the noise and shaking at the stop lights then choose a big cam and if that's is not what you want choose something smaller. I would do some research about cams and gain a little bit of knowledge before you choose one that way when you go into a tuner shop and are looking for a cam package you won't get something you don't want. I hope this helps some. If you want more info just send me a PM.

If yours goes in Friday and mine goes in Thursday, you had darn well better not get yours back first!!!! Just kidding, I'll post some numbers/video when I get it back; hope you'll do the same. Good luck and keep us posted. I would assume that if you have full exhaust, you would see at least what my friend saw with the X1 cam; weather is much cooler now.

Everybody is always focused on BIG cams and PEAK HP #s. I see lot's of guys bragging on the #s but what I want to see is the Dyno sheet. Show where the power comes in and over what RPM range I have the power. I've seen big cams boasting 425 hp #s. Problem is when you look at the Dyno sheet your power comes in at 6200 rpm and peaks at 6600 rpm. This may not be an RPM range that is suitable for your type of driving.

I have a 222/222/575. With Heads and other mods I get 408 rwhp. But more important is that I'm hitting 375 at 5000 rpm and pull to 408 at 6000 rpm. So even though I may not have the peak #'s some guys have I'm able to use my power at a more beneficial and longer rpm range. (by the time his power kicks in I'm gone)

I also Idle at 740 rpm, never surges or stalls and I pass smog in Vegas.

That said, the best thing is to honestly determine how you are going to drive the car. If it's primarily a street driver then you might want to get a cam that gives you more low end and mid range power and not worry so much about hitting a peak HP #.

Keep in mind that if you're doing a Cam anything over .550 you should probably upgrade the springs at the same time.

To be honest , I dont know jack about cams , I am just looking at the gains and went with what they suggested to get me there ... I am hoping for around 400 ...,new springs and pushrods included ... This all started because of cat. converter codes after he came back from the dealer for warranty work.....

If you have a good shop that you can trust they should be able to hook you up with what is best for your goals.

A4 or M6? Can make a diff in the cam selection as you typically drive A4s at a lower rpm range then a manual. Also are you looking for light to light performance or top end? Most guys are really looking for light to light.

The MTI Signature Series R1 Camshaft = 232/236 .575/.578 is a good choice for what i assume you're trying to acheive.

Completey understand you, however, to each his/her own. What is best for you may or may not be best for the next person. Like the previous post, I asked David at MTI to recommend a cam based upon what I wanted and expected from the modifications. Hence, the cam and package he suggested. I'm not out for just peak numbers, either, otherwise I would have gone with one of LG's packages that boast over 500rwhp.

Hum, my car gained a straight up 50rwhp with the only change adding a MTI X1 cam. The R1 is known to make a couple more ponies.

Here are my sheets. First one is with Kook's Lt's and tune and adding the X1 cam. The second sheet is adding the TSP 5.3L Stage 2.5 heads.
