The C5 holds 6.5 quarts of oil.

With that said, there are two full indications on the dipstick. Early years show full at the top of the hash mark (normal full indication).

Later years (not sure about the cutoff) show full at half the hash mark (due to GM changing dipstick tube/stick).

After you drain your oil, and lift the rear higher (to drain out an additional 4 ounces), put in 6.5 quarts of oil. Run engine. Let sit for at least 7 minutes, and observe oil mark, this is your full line. Of course this is on a level surface.

My 01 always takes 7.0-7.2, 6.5 not even close. I've change my oil at least 20 times and its always the same results

Raise the rear of the Vette only if necessary to level the oil pan.

Quote from shop manual:

Important

In order to completely drain the oil from the oil pan internal baffling, the bottom of the oil pan must be level during the oil drain procedure.

Allow a MINIMUM of 7 MINUTES for the engine oil to fully drain, once the engine oil drain plug and the engine oil filter are removed.

If you drain it properly (rear slightly higher than front) and allow enough time for all the oil to drain, it will take 7 quarts. Just did it and dip stick reads right at full.
