I wash first with Dawn which really removes a lot of tar, grease. Then claybar using a squirt bottle of water with a little Dawn and lots of water to lube as I go. Then wash it again. Then wax, polish - I use Zaino Z5 polish and Z6 gloss enhancer. Usually only claybar every 2 years or so. May do some spot claybar especially around rear of wheel wells. Worth doing at least once and as needed after that.
Everything I've read has always said not to use detergent on car paint. Don't quite remember why but they had a reason.
it takes me hours to do mine i wash it then use car wash and wash it again but using the clay bar it makes the surface slicker than the spray it never sticks then i wash it again wiht a fresh bucket of soap and water. then all the other stuff its takes a long time. but the clay bar gets allot of dirt of u wopuldnt think is there. just my 2 cents

Dawn has a high alkali content and is good for removing stubborn debris and some layers of wax. Some call it the 'first blood' car washing liquid.
You end up with a clean surface from wax and polish. I would not use it every time you wash the car but would use it when you are going to do extensive 'deep' detailing.
Where can you buy just the clay? I can only find it in the expensive packages with the detail spray included, which I have bottles galore of. I’m a klutz and end up dropping the bar at some point and have to toss it.

Zaino sells clay bars in a set of two. Individually wrapped.
Tip: lay a clean towel down under the area you are working (claying) for example on the sides and upper edges. That way if you do accidently drop it, it's still usable.
Tip 2: Use one-half capful of the same car wash you use to wash the vehicle (in Zaino case, Z7) into an 8 oz or so spray bottle add water for your lubricant. Make it don't buy it. I use an empty Z8 spray bottle.

Washing after clay is not necessary if you use a good detailing spray wax as a lube. Just wipe off with a good microfiber cloth. Follow with a fine polish to remove any swirl marks followed by a good wax and finally with a sealant. You will be amazed at the results. It takes me about a good 6 to 8 hours. The secret is using good products. I've been doing this for years with great success.

That's what my answer was going to be re: using Dawn. But you said it so much better. I also would wax-polish SOON after washing with Dawn. The Dawn pretty much helps remove, along with the claybar, just about any protection on top of the clearcoat.
