I believe GM has a factory "fix" for the column lock problem, a kit that by-passes this system. Does anyone have a link to this TSB. I want to get all the problems upgraded/fixed before my car is out of warranty. My car is an '04, which I plan on keeping a very long time, the lock problem sounds scary. (BTW, sorry if i'm beating a dead horse)
Thank you, but I was looking for the factory fix, GM's version of the column lock bypass. They can install it, and it won't cost me a dime!

John,
I took my 2000 to the Chevy dealer last Thursday for an anti freeze leak. While they had the vette they called to tell me I had an outstanding recall for the column lock. There was NO CHARGE for the recall. Good Luck
For the umpteenth time. Install a CLB and DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR THE RECALL. They will not fix the problem, only re- program your ccomputer, which you do not want to do.
End of story.

I have a 99 automatic I believe the recall was done late 2005. I will check with dealer. I can hear the motor to the pin running when I remove and insert the key from the ignition but the wheel does not lock. Battery went dead last week.. Now I get the pull key and wait 10 seconds and service column lock messages.. Worst thing car wont go past 1 mph. Now what do I do?
Contact Corvettes of Houston..Order a Coulmn Lock Bypass..Install according to instructions...I've been.... where you're at. You need a CLB not another GM "FIX"

I had my bye pass kit and was planning on doing it one saturday morning. after the recall had been DONE. and sure nuff backing out of the carport the service column lock massage appeared. i called my buddy who was supposed to help, thought i was joking ! when i told him what was happening . so i loaded the car on the trailer and carried it to his house to in install the bye pass kit and we pulled 2 fusses for a few seconds and now no more problems . and he said he has had it work on another car also .
but that's where the problem is they dont fix the pin you hear. thats what controls yours gas and cuts the car off when you go 2 mph

Reason: spelling
Once again, there is no GM "fix" for a MN6 car. Column can still lock but you won't be able to drive the car, only flatbed to the dealer again.
GET THE CLB....
We all know that the GM fix DOES not work. They have had 3 or 4 now and they still don't have it right. Get a CLB. If you can afford a Vette what's another $50 not to have any more problems. In fact GM paid for my CLB.
CLB is the way to go. Don't wait until it's too late. It is easy to install. Why take the chance? It can be embarrassing and a pain in the azz when the column lock strikes!

So, on an Auto, does the CLB work even if one of the recall "fixes" has been installed and does not work? I don't know which fix was attempted, all they'll tell me is that the recall has been performed on the car.

It sounds like your locking plate has been removed as per the late '05/early '06 recall. They also reprogramed your computer to shut down your fuel supply if the computer thinks your column lock is stuck in the locked position. Right now your GM version of the clb is malfunctioning and the computer thinks your column is locked up and is telling your fuel pump to shut down. I would call GM customer service and find out if they will fix it for free and flatbed your car since they caused the problem. You are not the only one to have this problem. I have seen many in the past year have the same problem here on the forum.
I have an '02 MN6 with a CLB that I installed and my recall notice is still sitting here on my desk. The only way I would allow them to do the recall is to be certain that they don't reflash the computer.
Good luck in getting your problem solved.
You know how dealers work. I took it in for a leaky axle seal and they did a column lock recall on it.
They wanted to do the recall on mine when I took it in for the leaky axle seal, too. I refused to let them do it and they had me sign a refusal which I did gladly sign.
No recall done on mine and no problems. Only a CLB.
For those of you reading this who are new owners and don't know whether your car has the CLB or not, you can check by trying to turn steering wheel while key is not in car. If the wheel will turn you already have a CLB or GM has removed the locking plate. Also, you can call the nearest Chevy dealer and give them your VIN and have them run it through their competer to see if there are any recalls outstanding and possibly even get a printout of all factory service work that has been performed since day one.
