Default Opening Trunk Lid, Convertible

Took our "new" 2003 AE out for a drive yesterday. One issue I've noted is opening the trunk lid. The latch releases OK but the lid doesn't "pop up" far enough to get your fingers under the lid to fully open it. You have to try and pry it up with your finger nails before you can get your hand under it.

Is that normal???

Pretty much. Many have had success by lubing all the mechanisms.

Open the lid with one of the doors open and then close the door. The inside pressure created will pop the lid up higher. But yes, it's pretty normal.

If that doesn’t work the first couple of times, you may have to put the top up! Sorry, even the wife mentioned I was a smart a** this morning.

I don't think the deck lid was engineered that way, but on my car you can yet your fingers under the right side easier than the left, so that's the side I pry it from. When it's very cold out the deck hardly pops up at all. Then I have to pry the right edge with a key. Shutting the door will also pop it.

You can lube the lock and also adjust the two rubber stops . 1/4 turn out it may help spring the lid up a little higher so you can get your fingers under to lift the lid.

Thanks everyone. I'll remember the "closing the door" trick and look at adjusting the down stops. The thought of adding a small spring somewhere has also come to mind.

I dont think this is normal. my 98 pops up about an inch or so. I know it must be ok because the wife uses the car and doesnt have an issue with it. I think it can be made better, I wouldnt live with it.

My lid gave me a good 3/4" when I first bought it. Several months went by and it turned into fingernail clearance. Some WD-40 applied carefully to all the moving parts gave me 1".

with the WD40. I have to spray it about every few month and that keeps her up.

Forgot to say; on my wifes car.

Had the same problem. A little WD-40 in the latch mechanism did the trick.

It might also be the cold. Mine normally pops up about an inch, but this morning it was 20deg in my garage and it did not pop up, so I had to do the door trick.

I had the same problem. After many WD-40 aplications I decided to bond a flat spring in the gutter right behinde the latch mechanism. Trunk now pops up every time

Adjust the springs, lube all moving parts and clean and lube the weather strips. Do these and problem solved. Mark
