Default center console not opening properly

The center console door on my 2003 only opens halfway, but if I put pressure on it from the passenger side toward the midline while lifting the door up the normal way, it opens easily. Its as though there isn't enough clearence between the top and bottom pieces. I can not see any adjustments available at the screws at the hinge. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution?

It is a double acting (my term) type hinge. You must left up and pull toward you at the same time. Yours is not broken that is the way they work.

A little oil on the hinge will do the trick.

It was designed with safety in mind..On an Impact, the lid will not open all the way keeping projectiles from flying out of the console. Just some forward thinking. Soon all cars will be required to have this design. We did this 10 years ago. It also serves to allow the lid to open all the way without hitting the passenger's seat.

I didn't realize it opened more than halfway until I saw a thread on here and oiled the hinges.

I just came in from spraying some GM Super Lube on my console hinge and all I can say is WOW! Thanks for the tip CF.

btw, I use this lube for numerous items and find it to work well and last relatively long. It dries after application and it carries PTFE .

Mine was like this for 4 years. I read Cozmo's "oil post" and rushed out to the garage with a 3in1 oil can, oiled the hinges and WHAM! It works (and has worked ever since) like it should have always worked! I was blown away that such a tiny drop of oil could over ride GMs engineered triple backflip console lid hinge. This fix as minor as it is, is good enough to be a "Sticky"

Thanks folks, I just got the car Wedsneday night and thought I was having a problem with it already. Not that I don't expect to have problems, (I traded my C4 for it) but I was hoping to pace myself. I will post pics as soon as the weather clears up here. Its been real cloudy here in Orlando but fortunately we're far enough south from where the tornados hit that we're only geting the clouds and rain from the storm. Will post pics next week.

I got my '99 a couple of months ago with the same problem. Saw the "lubrication" thread, rushed to the garage and got the same results. I have one more slight issue that maybe someone else has had.
Mine doesn't quite close all the way. Maybe 3/8 - 1/2 inch.
Figure the hinge is sprung, but can't see an easy way to remedy it.
Any ideas on this?
