Default C5 solid targa top question.

I have not owned my '98 for a summer. Will the solid top keep the interior cooler in summer? I haven't examined one yet. Is there a headliner in these? Just need a little help as I have to drive 2 1/2 hrs each way to pick one up. It happens to be the same color. I didn't even know what to look for as far as inside the top. Think I should just replace the glass top?
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Yes it will keep the car cooler. There is a black headliner on the inside. If the price is right, go for it. Using the solid top periodically will probably extend the life of your glass top.

The solid top will keep the inside cooler in the summer sun. It has a fixed (non-removable) headliner. The solid top also is quieter due to the headliner.

I have both tops, but haven't had the glass top on in years. Just pop the solid off when I want open space.

If you have an opportunity to get one, especially a color match for your car and the price is right, go for it.

Take your car when you go to look at it. Check for any damage to the frame, make sure all the latches function and secure the lid properly. If your familiar with your glass setup, the solid is the same.

Good luck with your decision.

My 03 has both tops. When I bought it in August they had the glass top on it so we left it on. The blue color was hard to get used to while driving. After parking it for just a little while with the windows up it gets roasting hot inside. We switched to the solid top because the air leaks on the glass top were driving us crazy. The solid top is quieter and keeps the interior cooler.

After I get the air leak problems fixed, we'll probably use the glass top on cool days. Wish they'd do something about that bright blue color when looking from the inside though. Just doesnt' seem natural. I have a sunroof in my Avalanche. It doesn't have a funny color and seems to block the heat better than the glass top on the C5.

I only had a blue glass top on my 93. I actually liked that color top. However, a white car, with a white interior, and it was an oven in the summertime even with the windows cracked open a bit. My 03 has the solid top( electron blue color).Even though it is a darker color, the car is light years cooler in summertime heat. If it's the right color and the right price, don't even think about it. Get the solid top.

PS. They make a plastic static film stick on for glass tops. I think Corvette Central sells it, or Mid America. Don't know if it works, but I think it was only about $30.

These liners work extremely well. I bought a glass top for use in the winter and planned to use the painted top in the summer. I have not used the painted top in 2 years. I was once stuck on I-15 around Baker for a few hours and the climate control read 132 degF and I was comfy inside the car with the static cling liner on the glass roof.

I got my car in January and have both tops. I'd planned on doing the winter/summer switch too. Didn't know about these liners. Are they an easy install and can they be easily removed if needed? It's really sunny here in Reno, but I like the look of the winter/glass top.

There is a noticeable difference when parking the car out in the sun. The glass top lets a lot more heat in.

The advertising says that it can be applied and removed any time you want.It is item#602-164 at$27.99, for 97-04 cars. It's on page 101 in the Mid America catalogue, or go to www.mamotorworks.com. They say it comes in Cool Gray or Black. The other people here seem to think it works. I never tried it so I can't give you a true review of it. Good luck, BE COOL!

Default Buy The Solid Top!!!

I live in Florida so I know what you mean about the heat inside the car with the clear top on.

DO NOT BUY AN INSERT AS IT MAY ACCELARATE THE CRAZING OF THE CLEAR TOP!!!

My clear top was in perfect shape until I purchased a liner for it. The liner did an ok job of keeping down the heat but I truly believe it accelarated the aging of the clear top. After using the liner for a summer my once prestine clear top looks horrible.

I finally found a matching solid top and bought it about a year ago. It works FANTASTIC!! I highly recommend buying one. I still use the clear top in during the cooler month as I really like seeing thru it.

Do yourself a favor and buy the solid top.

Thank you for this information. I hadn't even thought about that. I guess I just do the summer/winter thing, as I have both tops.
