Hey..my vette is my daily driver and yes, it's driven in the rain. Is there ANYTHING that's made to help from the water just POURING into the trunk when you open it? What a terrible design flaw. I have tons of gear to lug to work with me and have to go in and out of the trunk....so either it gets wet..or..is there a solution?
Believe it or not, GM made the speakers waterproof ! There is some kind of seal/gasket fix on later year C5's, not sure how good it is or if it is worth it to convert?
The later year modification can not be retrofitted:
Supplement to 73-10-55 Water Drips into Rear When Hatch Is Opened #PI00049 - (Jun 20, 2002)
Supplement to 73-10-55 Water Drips into Rear When Hatch is Opened
.
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
Condition/Concern:
Vehicle may have a concern with water dripping into the rear compartment after the hatch is opened.
Recommendation/Instructions:
The weatherstrip modification outlined in Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 73-10-55 should be applied. The new design weatherstrip, implemented in late '99 model year production, cannot be retrofitted. Reference SI doc 298264 for original TSB and 170741 for illustrations.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
Here is the limited fix:

My coupe is a daily driver as well. I have the same problem and the only "solution" I have come up with is to open the hatch slowly so the water runs into the channel and does not splash into the trunk area. It doesn't work perfectly, but it helps.

It's about all you can do. I've not seen any "modification" that would resolve this problem.

I do this, or just open it a crack, hold for a second or two, then open all the way, that way most of the water normally goes right into the side tray where it supposed too.

My '99 had this problem. that about the only cure for this is to open the hatch slowly and let the water drain off. Shame they didn't come up with a fix that could be retrofitted to the '99 and earlier C5s.

I know what you mean, but most of my water run off goes into the drainage channels along the weather stripping. Probably only 10-15% makes it inside the car.
You could always bring along one of those car squeegees to use before you open it. I've just resorted to not opening the back while its raining until I get it reasonably dried off.
