Default Tire sensors

What is it to change these out when you are putting on new rims?

It's easy. The main body goes inside the wheel, with the valve stem protruding through the hole. You tighten the nut down the valve stem. This presumes that you buy wheels that are made for the sensors...

Had all mine replaced at Discount Tire yesterday and questioned them ahead of time about meeting the recommended inch-lbs torque value. They had just received a new tire-sensor torque tool that had a blue knurled shaft and looked like a fat screwdriver with a T-handle on top. It would click when the proper valve-stem torque was reached. Under or over tightening could be a problem.

When you get the tires back on then you have to reset the sensors by wheel so you can tell which tire is being read. Search tire sensors and you will find a thread on sequence to follow. All you need is a magnet, i used one of those small ones that telescope out and it worked. You use the DIC and follow the sequence by wheel, RF, LF, etc.

Why recommend extra work? If he is reusing his TPS, as long as the TPS goes back to its original position on the car (i.e. LF, RF, LR, RR), he will not have to retrain the sensors. Now admittedly the tire monkey may not keep track of which is which, but he can.

Hard to say what is causing this. Hopefully they didn't damage the sensor when they removed the tire from the wheel. Theoretically, there should be nothing to reset, but frankly all these electronics sometimes cause gremlins that even the engineers can't figure out. In your case, it probably would be worth retraining (or at least trying to retrain) the sensor - start with the easy remedies first!! Good luck.

How big of a magnet do you need to reprogram the sensors?

Nah, just retrain the sensor. I remember someone said deflating and then reinflating the tire might be helpful too - I don't know why or how, but I guess that can't hurt....

Yes, your right if he's not replacing the sensors just keep track of where the tires go.

The magnet i used was one of those mechanics magnets you can get in most auto parts stores. It's like one of those extension pointers with a small magnet on the end but its pretty powerful.

I posted this on a related thread yesterday where I was having trouble getting a magnet to work for reprogramming - tried 3 magnets. Finally I figured out (in my case) that I had to leave the magnet motionless for 5-seconds on each new sensor - then the horn confirmation sounded - that worked for me? Less than 5 seconds was not enough on mine for some reason?
