It means that the security system messed up. When your key is out of the car can you still turn your steering wheel? If so this means your column lock system has either been disabled via the recall or by an aftermarket device, which is a good thing. If your wheel does still lock, then you need to get a Column Lock Bypass (CLB) kit installed right away.
As for the pull key message, on my 97 I get that message from time to time, usualy when it has been sitting for a week or so (and the battery is a little lower than it should be), or once in a while when the car is under a heavy load (like AC running while the car is idling with the headlights on).
