I put on new rims (aftermarket) and the balance seemed to be off so I took it to the stealership. Now, the manager tells me that the tires "are choppy" if this is even a term. I asked and he explained the tires need replaced. The tires have 17K on them and have tread WTF and this is the reason for the choppiness he explained!
Does this make sense before I spend $$ on new tires.
Get them balanced on a Road Force machine. These can tell if the tire is out of round. Check the amount of weights used to balance the wheels, if it is a lot, they probably have the heavy part of tire lined up with the heavy part of the wheel, a good place would have turned tire 90 degrees instead of using so much weight.
Choppy means thay have to be chopped to make up the dealers profits
Sounds like to me
go to a place that balances tires for a living. (that does speak corvette) and they can get them balanced and you will be fine without 'chopping your budget'. Good luck
Go to the Southeast part of the Events and Regional part of the forum. There are a TON of Vette owners in the Sunshine State that can give you recommendations.
If they only have 17k on them I would go back to the place where they were sold and installed. Maybe the manufacturer will give you credit if the tires are truely bad.
"Choppy" is sometimes used to describe scalloping in the tread... even patterned low spots like waves all around the tire (if that makes any sense). Bad alignment or slack in a control arm will do it according to my tire guy, but usually on one tire, as will a bad belt. If that isn't what he meant, I don't have a clue about his Choppy. Is it one, two or all four? 17K is about all RunCraps will do in my limited experience with three sets. A Hunter Roadforce balance may be worth a try.
I have had great service and attentin form my dealer. But I would never take my wheel, tire, alignment needs to my dealer. A Goodyear Tire center would be and has been my choice for years. My concern for you would be that some Reproduction rims at times can be very difficult to balance. I would try a rebalance at Goodyear and if that did not work I would remount and rebalance - but a Goodyear Tire Center can and will help you with those decisions.
