This is fun.... I would like to tell you that yes a viper is a awesome car and it is fast as hell and I like them as well, hell how can you argue with big block power "I also own a 70 olds cutlass with a stroked 455". Now let me address some of the things some of you have saying about the mods on my car. Yes I have headers my car it dynode 6 hp LESS hp with them on and the damn check engine light will not go off, so that means my car is slower with the headers on it. The car made 371.9 RWHP with no headers and only the Halltech air induction. With the headers the power fell to 365 RWHP. I dont really know what to do. As for the MPH my car is doing it is slower than another guys 02 who has went 119.6 with only the air box. I would love anytime to race a Viper with headers or no header air cleaner or now air cleaner. The only viper owner I know has a Venum 650 which would wax, polish and remove my doors on the way by. So if you know anyone in the Atlanta area lets run them.
I am not saying a viper is slow, but it seems that everyone that owns one has the fastest car on the street  I am 6'4, My legs hit the wheel in a viper, I don't like the way the transmission shifts, It hurt my back after driving for 50 miles, and the last rt10 I drove burned my leg when I got out of it..That's why I don't own a viper. And optic gave the challenge. I have already beat a stock 2000 gts here locally, only with a t1 on mine. He ran a 12.4@115 and our air is crap here. I would be more than happy to bring my Z to Atlanta, or see the viper again in Bristol. Optic has my full support..I'm not saying we own the fastest cars on the planet. But, for what they are, Stock vipers beware..Now we can do more tricks to our cars too. This is pointless and getting tiresome..As well as I have offered, If you dont like the Z, My 6 cylinder will rip your v10 a new personality..I dont mean to :cry about it, but Quit beating up on the Z and get with it.Dave
Since some sharp drivers get '01 Z06s to do low-12s stone stock @ 113-114mph, I think low 12s on an '02 is definately more prevalent. Stock Viper GTS at the track I hear get mostly low 12s too.
So here' my crystal ball: in the quarter from a standing start an '02 Z06 is dead even with a Viper GTS. BUT...the Viper GTS in stock form gets 118-119mph traps while the '02 Z06 in stock from gets about 116mph.
So the quarter mile run (and beyond) will look like this...the Z06 with its overall shorter first gearing (2.97?? first and the 3.42 differential gear) and substantially lighter weight makes it easier for it to get the jump on the Viper (2.66 1st and 3.08 rear end). But the Viper's shear engine output to vehicle mass ratio advantage helps it regain the ground it initially lost. And despite it's bigger frontal area and inferior Cd, I think the Viper will begin to open the lead just after the quarter and pull away ever so slowly to maybe 140-150mph and then the two cars will pull evenly or maybe even the Vette starts coming toward the Viper again (due to the Vette's superior aerodynamics, smaller cross sectional area, and the juicier gear that the Vette is sweeping through). The Vette's advance toward the Viper will stop once it reaches it's redline at 176? mph as it runs "out of gear." And the Viper pulls away yet again to its top speed of 185-189mph.
It may very well be the greatest street car drag race in history if someone can ever get a video of it from the beginning to the end.
I raced against an '02 bone stock Z06 with under 1000 miles on the clock at Route 66 in Joliet a week ago. It ran a 118.xx trap speed. No aftermarket airbox, no aftermarket anything. Pump gas. I think it would have done very well against a bone stock Viper. :chevy Oh, I did beat him

As much as I hate to quote Ragazine articles there was a recent test of a Z06 and a Viper GTS from 0-150 MPH and the Viper won handily. I can't remember the exact time but it was someting like C5 32 sec, 29 sec for the Z06, and 23 sec for the Viper, maybe somebody can find the correct numbers. Anyhows your assumption of the Viper pulling away after the 1/4 is accurate. The Z06 begins to fall back at higher speeds, then it quickly fades into the distance never to be seen again :smash:
I have never raced a Z06 at the track so I don't know how well they do but I have raced 3 at impromptu street racing and soundly killed them all. None were from a dead stop, so I suspect it would have been closer if that was the case. But you know what they say about street racing, anything can happen :D
That must've been one mean Z06, when it traps only 2 mph less than you and has 70-75 less rwhp....
I like vettes, hell I have one (90 ZR-1), and I'm planning on getting a C-5 for daily driving.
At the track anything can happen, it is all traction, and reaction time.
Now on the streets and from a roll the GTS wins hands down.
Have any of you guys driven a viper, or raced one from a 50 mph roll...
Let me tell you.. Viper 4th gear is a BITCH!!!... It pulls and pulls...
Don't put all your moneys in one bag and go by someone elses track times or even what you've seen at the track.. (Most Vipers I've seen here are 12.5 at 115 mph)... when you run one from a roll you'll believe!!.. Trust me
The Viper and the Z06 at the drag strip, will depend on the driver in most cases..In the world of road racing, once again its the driver..If you can find a mile or more of open road, the Viper [GTS] should come out on top...But guys, if you can , drive a Viper...It is a bad boy make no mistake, but it hasnt had 50 years of grooming.... :chevy
I ran at the Vette/Viper shootout in Bradenton, FL this past weekend sponsored by Breathless Performance Products. My Bro-In-Law owns a '02 Z06 and a ACR Viper. The Vette has vortex rammer and bridge, Viper is stock (460 HP). I made over 20 passes in each car. Track conditions were poor the entire day. HOT, humid and a 20+ mph headwind. As was said before a great driver will win the race in either car. An average driver will win most of the time in the Viper. My best times were 12.61 in the Z06 and 12.38 in the Viper. They are both awesome cars but I would take the Z over the Viper if I had both offered to me for free (Actually, I would take the Viper and sell it and buy a Z then spend the other 35K on mods. for it)
Well it looks like we are having a good time again. As I stated I would love to race a viper so let me know if I have any takers. I think the sound of both cars at 6,000 rpms side by side would be a great rush.
Little true story you guys should love...Guy in my town wins 18 million couple years ago...Didnt have a license at the time,DUI,got it back so, buys a viper...Bought a second viper, acr, last spring, puts 50,000in mods into the car supposedly, goes to the track runs a 12:40 @ 118 and was absolutely wetting his pants about it at cruise night couple weeks ago... I looked at another guy who has raced for years, we near broke a nut laughing.... :U Just thought i'd pass it on :chevy
Its always refreshing to know that the C5 platform is currently the quickest platform when comparing to vipers. Just have to look to SW and ARE for that :)
