Well finally installed my Hurst shifter on my 2002 Z06 and wow what a feel. the car really makes you work to get the gear in. It may take a little get use to shifts are very positive and tight. I LIKE IT!!!! If you like a race car feel this is the shifter for you in my opinion.
That's one thing I liked more about my C4 than the C5 - The shifter. Even with the Hurst, my C4 was a buttery smooth shifting experience. I've felt the C5 Hurst and B&M, and they were way to notchy for me. I'm going to try the C6Z shifter, and if it's not to my liking, I'm sticking the stock shifter back on.
The shifter **** on a stock C5 is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. Thats the first thing that came off. Some GM desginer was obviously drunk when they designed that thing.

Hey, I've done some of my best work drunk !!! But, I agree, the **** is ugly.
Have had a Hurst shifter on mine since they first became available (I had it on back order at Summit Racing waiting for the shifter to be released) and really love the feel of it. To each his own, but I like notchy shifters where you KNOW if the car is in the correct gear.

Agreed...
I tried a couple of different styles and types of ***** on my Hurst shifter, just kept buying them from C5 parts, and re-selling - it only cost me shipping to try each one.
I ended up with a Delrin **** that looks kind of like a hot dog. Great feeling material, nice shape to hang on to, and it's a very dark grey, which looks great with the black interior.
Keep looking and trying them out, you'll find something that you like better than the stock one...

I agree. The delrin **** is great. I didn't think that I would like it at first. I still have to sell the Hurst Classic **** that I tried for a dayt...

+1. The only thing I've done to my Z06 so far is replace the godawful stock shift **** with the delrin "race" **** from Corvette Garage. 10 times better than stock, the only problem is that without a pattern on the thing I had to recently coach a valet who didn't speak english well on where reverse was.

i thought about the hurst or B&M. this may be a stupid question, but im wondering how i can tell if my car already has an aftermarket shifter. this one feels a bit shorter than the shifter in the '01 i test drove. plus i notice a rattle coming from the shifter (not the same rattle caused by a bearing in the tranny when clutch is engaged). this is definitely a bit of rattle coming from right underneath the shifter.
my car has the OEM shift **** tho, so i doubt its an aftermarket shifter. i thought maybe it was tho because at some point, the center dash/console fascia had been taken off. neither of my cig lighter jacks were getting power.... turns out that neither of them were hooked up. someone took the dash piece off and didnt plug them back in.
so i'd like to get the rattle fixed, and i'd love to know how to get the shift **** off. i noticed a small retangular pin in the shift ****... im guessing that has to be pulled out somehow. anyway... still learning about a LOT of things with these cars!

The aftermarket shifters don't usually come with a shift ****, you put the OEM **** back on it, so it is quite possible you have an aftermarket shifter.
To get the shift **** off you have to remove the "key". Protect the shift **** with a towel, and use a screwdriver to SLOWLY and GENTLY lever the key out. It comes straight up out of the shift lever.
Without question the best one (in my opinion) is the '07 C6Z shifter. Its not quite as short of a throw as the Hurst, but its very smooth with just a bit of "notch" to know exactly what gear you're in each time. I've also tried at least 5 ***** and this one is by far the most comfortable!
where can i get the '07 Z06 shifter and ****? i see plenty of the hurst and B&M shifters around. and im still wondering how i'll figure out if mine is stock or aftermarket. what should i be looking for? thanks!

gmpartshouse.com ask for Gene. Under $200 shipped for the entire assembly including the ****. If you have very long, lightweight shifts, then your shifter is stock. If it requires you to bench press 200 plus lbs to shift it, you have a Hurst or B&M.
Unless it's already spoken for (no, it's not mine), there is already a used one on EBAY for a reasonable price and it's complete. I can't add the link, but do a search under "Z06 Corvette" or "C5 Corvette".
says something about the isolator boot being ripped, but it's not necessary. what's that all about? i'd love to get one because im pretty sure i have the stock shifter. i can't imagine why my center dash fascia was taken off unless it was for the column lock recall that was done by a chevy dealer on this car already.
That's the one I was referring to...again, not mine...and I stand nothing to gain from its sale...(I surely wouldn't want anyone to misinterpret my intentions. ).
