I have a couple chips in my HUD windshield and started shopping around for a new one. WOW. So far, $761 installed is the best. Compared to $390 for a non-HUD windshield. That's a heck of a difference!! Anyone had one replaced in the chicagoland/NW Indiana area for a better price?
I heard that when the HUDs first came out, the windshield was about $2200 for it. Since then with many more HUDs out there on multiple cars, they've supposedly come down a lot. Not sure what they cost right now, but I'm due for one on my '99. Two small stars on it and a gaziilion pits.
FYI you don't need a HUD windshield, us guys with owner installed HUDs can vouch for that fact, don't waste your money(or your could try for a lightweight Z windsheld )

My parents Grand Prix worked without a HUD windshield just fine.
My insurance company paid about that much seems like just for the w/s. Few things I can say about the process. Replace the weatherstrip with a new one. Don't let whomever does it pop those triangle trim pieces out, the trim plus vertical weatherstrip comes out as a whole part with only a few screws and two pushin fasteners. Make sure who ever does it touches up any scratches from removing the old adhesive under the weatherstrip with this special GM touchup paint. You don't want any corrosion going on under the weatherstrip. I believe it is part of a kit that comes when they order a w/s.

Lots of people are using the non-HUD windshield and doing just fine.
Another difference, if you want to call it, between the vert and Z windshields over the COUPE is the antenna that is intergarated in the windshield, the Z has a fixed antenna and the vert has an electric antenna, so the HUD windshield, besides having a tint to allow the HUDs look brighter also has the antenna built in.
Now, I have seen a HUD on my buddies vert windshield and compared it to mine (coupe w/ HUD) and there is really no significant difference in appearance between the two.
I did just have mine replaced and with labor, windshield and new weatherstriping (must be replaced with install), it costed my insurance company just over $1K.

Convertibles do not have the antenna embedded into the windshield by default.
There was an option that you could order the vehicle with a hidden antenna (i.e., embedded in the windshield). Z's have fixed antennas. The rest motorized antennas.
I was driving "rather fast" and a rock chipped my windshield. I dont have hud but i am thinking about gettting it soon. So i used my insurance company bc i have full glass coverage and they replaced it with the hud winshield at no cost. Not sure what kind od insurance you have but it was quite the steal...worth lookin into
Appreciate all the info. Questions...so the reg w/s will also reflect the display only a little less brighter? What is a "lightweight Z w/s"? And lastly, if i get the reg (non hud) w/s will it have the antenna built in for my coupe? And as far as the insurance question, my deductible is $500 so I hate to file a claim, especially since I totalled my van 6 months ago...thanks Bambi

Yes, the regular windshield will reflect just fine.
A windshield specified for a Z is a bit thinner and therefore lighter in weight.
Yes, the antenna will be there just as long as you specify it's for the coupe.
