Default Custom Audio Question..

I keep having issues with wires touching behind my custom radio, does anyone else have this problem with lack of space for wiring with thier custom stereos and if so how did you solve it? My car stereo was installed at a shop and evertime i bring it in they tell me that there is virtually no room behind the radio..

what do you all have behind there, I have plenty of room. Mines just a kenwood cd/sirius player though.

If its just wires, i think they need to get back in there with a couple zipties and organize it a little better.

organization will go a long way towards fixing problems with wires. what do you mean by wires touching together? are things shorting out? blowing fuses, causing distortion etc...if so then you really need to fix up your wiring also. there can't be any exposed copper anywhere, if there is, then you need to fix it! Its sad, but I have seen "professionally" installed stereos done with horrible wiring practices. I've actually found one which had wires twisted together with some poorly placed pieces of electrical tape as an insulator. If you've got stuff like that back there...I'd pull it all out and redo it.

Man i need to start just learning to do this myself.. Ill prob do a better job then the hacks that claim to be professionals...Basically i got in my car the other day that i keep in storage and i just replaced with the optima yellow and it was dead. It has been sitting for about 2 months heated storage.Anyway I think that the wires are all jammed backe there with electrical tape. This may be causing my subs to work and then all of a sudden they dont.I brought it in to a local radio shop orig cause my tweaters kept cutting out. He pulled the radio/pioneer cd/mp3 player (avg size of all cd players) and taped up some wires but said that there isnt a lot of rood back there and i was on my way..Well now its actin up as described above and i almost think that something wiring related is drwaing off my battery when its not in use cause of the possibility of wires touching..Not sure though cd player seems to be okay..

Lenny, I know what you mean. I learned to do my first stereo install on the C5 too. I have an eclipse 7501 double din unit and it's very deep so what I did was remove the original HU (head unit) and also the AC controls, and then cut the bracket that was limiting the HU depth. I cut it with a dremel It's not pretty, but it works.

They used electrical tape? WTF?

They wire should be twisted so well you cant pull it apart easily, then soldered, then covered in heat shrink tubing.

butt crimp connectors might be acceptable, but not from a shop.

I've jammed a lot of stuff back there in mine.

The problems you have are completely unacceptable... It's not that friggin hard.

its good to know that such options exist though. what is that bracket made out of? my SHO has a Steel cross member right behind the stereo...there's no moving that! I'm glad that at least in the Vette its something which can be modified if the receiver is too deep. usually I find that the receiver itself fits fine, but the wires are too tight a fit in shallow bays.

I'm pretty sure it's steel. I bent my bracket back, rather than cutting it.

^ It's aluminium, not steel.
