I just found out a few days ago that flag poles of the Corvette emblem should always be pointed at the valve stem. What is the history behind this? Is it supposed to be good luck? Maybe it's suppose to give you an extra 5 HP. Any insight into this, or was this guy pulling my leg. I have no reason not to trust him, nor would I think that he would tell me something like this if it wasn't true.

That's a new one to me... Is the guy who told you this a fellow vette owner?
He's my brother, and he just purchased a C6 Z06. We were detailing the wheels and when we were finished I put on the center caps. He told me that I put them on wrong. He said that the flag poles should always be pointed at the valve stems. To be honest, I don't think he even knows why, but I can't imagine that he would lie to me about something that he doesn't even know about.
It may be possible that he just has an "attention-to-detail" mode...
I am kinda the same way (real specific about things)...
- When removing all tires, etc. The valve stem has to be in the same place from front to rear wheel.
- Cigarrete lighter has to be facing correctly, can't have the cigarette photo upside-down.
- Steering wheel has to be pointing straight when I park; I can't leave it with the wheels turned.
- Fluid covers under the hood have to have the emblems all facing in the same direction, so it's uniform...
I guess as corvette owners, we hold ourselves to the highest standards and that's why we drive the best car out on the road!
Maybe there is some sort of tradition though... I'd be interested to find out. My 97 C5 doesn't even have flags on the center caps though, on OEM wheels.

That is my brother to a "T". Very particular, but I am more so the same way. So when I was putting all the center caps back on, I was aligning them so they were all facing the same way. That's when he told me about this "tradition". So all the flags were going every which way which is odd for my brother to do unless something like this is influencing it. I've been trying to search the web but come up short.
It's an old Concours trick and a tie breaker. When I have my tires mounted the Goodyear (or whatever name) is always opposite the valve stem. When I arrive at the show, I jack up the car and make sure the wheel is set proper with the name at the top and the valve stem is on the bottom. With a C-5 stock center caps they will always be "off" center so I purchased a blank set of caps, bought a color matching set of flags from Cyberdine and made sure they are horizontal with the ground. Everyone thinks I'm nuts but my trophy room tells the difference. That's the story....

I just noticed you were in Albuquerque. Are you stationed at Kirkland? My dad was there for awhile doing something with nuclear inspection. For some reason I want to say that he was the DON or something like that. He retired from the USAF after 22 years, but Albuquerque was the last placed we were stationed (that was like 12 years ago). Nice place, I loved the Sandia Mountain Range. It looked awesome when the sun was hitting it at sun down.
Never heard that one before. I think its more for looks then function (I can see how it would look sharp, rather then just random placement), but this sounds like a good Corvette Urban Legend!

So it doesn't have anything to do with Corvette lore? It's just a showmans trick for car shows (which you don't do since you are right, you can't get the flag poles to point at the valve stem). Hmmmm...that's interesting. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, stationed at Kirtland AFB... I like the area, but then again, I'm originally from about 200 miles away, so it's close to home.
Not familiar with the acronym "DON," perhaps "IG?" Not sure, but yeah we have alot of ongoing inspections, etc.
I've been here at Kirtland for the past 5 years, kinda getting ready for a change, but the weather is great for "Corvette Rides," even in the Nov/Dec months...
Frankly, I love to buy cars from **** retentive people. You can bet your life that the cars have been EXTREMELY WELL MAINTAINED.

You're right, I do maintain my car (even the family mini-van properly).
But that don't mean the vette or my Dodge Ram Hemi haven't seen their time at the track. I use them for what they were meant to be used, but under proper maintenance...
