Default Cigarette lighter not working.

Ive got a 2003 z06 and the front cigarette ligher keeps blowing fuese. Theres no way im going to be able to follow its wires to the fues box. However, would anyone be able to tell me if just cutting the wire to it and running new wires to the center console ligher would be a bad idea? Would it take to much power having both running off the power of one?
Thanks
Joe

I don't know about a new wire, but I'd take a close look a the lighter socket. I would suspect that there is something shorting the socket itself, or replace the socket (it has to be easier then re-wiring the car).

It's either the lighter itself, or the socket. Not a big deal to replace everything.

Does it blow without the lighter in the socket? Does it blow immediately, or intermittently? There's also an orange wire coming off the same fuse (#7 fuse, 20amp) that is blunt cut and taped. Has anyone tapped into that orange wire for any aftermarket accessories? If the fuse blows immediately without the lighter in, you have a short in the wiring to the 12v on the lighter socket, or on that orange wire. If it only blows when you push in the lighter, it's obviously either the socket or the lighter, unless you are using a smaller than 20 amp fuse. Unplug the wire to the lighter socket and if it no longer blows the fuse, replace the socket. If it still blows, trace the wire back to see where it's pinched or the insulation is worn. Let us know what you find.

I had this problem years ago when I first got the car. In my case, the wiring clip on the back of the socket was not on correctly. Just take the center arm rest and radio bezel off to get to it. It is the likely culprit.

I love a good smoke, have a full 300 count humidore.. and I would never smoke in my car. I just respect my cars to much for that... then again to each their own and I will not tell you how to live, just my take on it.

Id rather use the front one than the back one, with the armrest and all. the fues seems to blow imidatly when i start the vette, doesnt need anything plugged into it it seems. Im not 100% on that its just when the fuse was replaced the 1st time i went to use it and it was already blown.Ill let you know what i find. I am wating on a new ingition bezel i should have soon and ill get in there and look.
Thanks
Joe

Mr. Zip (or should I say Mr. Zig-Zag, because it appears you're smoking some other alternative),
