The way the limiter works is a fuel cut-off set at 6200. Same concept in most FI cars (and bikes - my 2003 Harley has the limiter, set at 5500). When you hit it, the fuel is cut off and the car feels like it's missing.
Does it actually cut the fuel off or just let off the throttle a bit? It's fly by wire and it seems that cutting the fuel off would be unecessary.
If you miss shift into neutral youll be fine, if you miss shift back into a lower gear is when it will hurt you. And rev limiter doesnt set any codes btw
a friend of mine told me that the computer had two connectors on it. one for economy(speed limiter) and one without. he said gm put it in so people couldn't out run the cops but all you have to do is plug in the other connector. told him i had my 99 coupe up to 140. he says it's there though. anyone hear of this?
Your friend is full of it. There is only the above mentioned RPM limiter. There is no speed limiter. The limit is aerodynamic drag at around 175 on a stock car. Increase the HP and you can go faster. To go a lot faster, you need a lot more HP, as power required goes up with the cube of velocity. The 06-07 Z06 with the same gearing can only get to 198 with 505hp.

That's not a speed limiter. It's a aural speed warning. I frequently have it on my vette, also.

Many times when you hit the limiter hard (like you did) your car will throw these codes, P0171 & P0174 and those codes WILL turn the Check Engine light on......

They mean you have leaned out the engine.
There is a code thrown for each bank (each side) of the engine.
P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
P0174 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2

Your friend should stick with things he knows something about. This ain't one of em.

CLASSIC!!!!
I blew my push rods on my '99 coupe twice, when it was stock, due to pushing the car too hard. I over revved the car and POP...POP...BANG!
I was fortunate enough to have a freind in the service department at Chevy and they covered the repairs under warranty, both times.
I then had the heads, cam and tune done in the car and now it makes power up to 6900 rpm's.
I shift at 6750, tp stay on the safe side. The car runs very strong, getting those extra RPM's made the car feel like a brand new car once the tune and sdjustments were made.
The stock stuff just isnt made to take that type of a beaten, the rev limiter will only save you some of the time.
The speed limiter in the PCM is factory set at 255mph.
Well, no limiter of any consequence. If you run up against that limit, you're a better man than me, Charlie Brown. It's not like on early 90s F-bodies, where if you didn't buy the Z-rated tires, the PCM limited you to 108mph.

Depends on the gear.
1-4 & 6 is a hard fuel cutoff
5th is gradual so it feels like your maxing out against the air resistance. Actually, whoever said that the only speed limiter is air resistance is full of it. The Z06 can go faster than stock if you only raise the rev limiter in 5th gear 200-500 rpm.
