Do C5's Have a Rev Limiter??
Hello Folks,
I got a little excited yesteday as I was fryin' up some rice that wanted to race. Pulling 3rd gear as I watched him getting smaller in my rear view mirror, the power started falling off, and glancing at the tach, I was well into redline area somewhere around 6500+ RPMs I think.
Do C5's, 6 sp, have rev limiters built in? (car is stock) It felt like I was hitting a rev limiter. Engine seems fine though.
Thanks,
Pete

Thanks guys. New with the Vette so I just got a little excited. Anyone know what RPM the stock rev limiter would be set to??
Thanks,
Pete

I believe the stock limiter is about 6200rpm. However, if you hit it, there will be absolutely no question that you did. Power does not gradually, and gently, back down. The engine starts cutting out to prevent exceeding it. When I did it, when stock, except for changed shift points with a Hypertech, I thought I had trashed my engine at first. Scared the crap out of me. If you're asking the question, I suspect you did not hit it. You would have known.

Don't make a mistake though, If you miss shift the limiter will NOT save you. You'll need some new push-rods in a hurry.
Also the tach is kind of slow, do not wait until 6000 to start changing gears, it will be to late. You can raise the limiter to 6500 by getting a tune or a handheld programmer.

The way the limiter works is a fuel cut-off set at 6200. Same concept in most FI cars (and bikes - my 2003 Harley has the limiter, set at 5500). When you hit it, the fuel is cut off and the car feels like it's missing.
I had a Hertz Shelby a month or so ago, and was out driving it one night (late). I got on the freeway hard, enjoying the noise and g forces, when it started cutting out. I looked down, and the speedo was just nudging 100 MPH. So they had a speed limiter set - acted just like the rev limiter.
Best not to push it, unless it's set really low (like the GT-H car was). Still, it's a bit of a security blanket.
BTW, the A4 cars also have the shift light. Comes on just south of 6k RPM. Oh, and the automatics are supposed to prevent over-rev downshifts, but I don't trust them - same as not trusting the rev limiter. Good concept, but best to leave a little safety margin.
And those LSx engines wind up fast, don't they!

Lot of guys set theirs up to 7 or even 7500 depending on the tune.
above 6500 many times valve float occures and HP is dropping off at that point or will shortly there after.

hey
a friend of mine told me that the computer had two connectors on it. one for economy(speed limiter) and one without. he said gm put it in so people couldn't out run the cops but all you have to do is plug in the other connector. told him i had my 99 coupe up to 140. he says it's there though. anyone hear of this?

Many times when you hit the limiter hard (like you did) your car will throw these codes, P0171 & P0174 and those codes WILL turn the Check Engine light on......

the Z06 is set a little higher than the vert or coupe. I believe that the rev limter can be change used one of the programmers.
