Default Traction Control Probs

Alright guys, noticed something odd the past couple days.....sometimes when I turn off the traction control system, to ahve a lil fun, I get DTC codes and dash lights up with service abs system/traction system....or something to that effect and the abs light and brake lights come on....but after i tpark and turn the car off then back on its like it never happened.....Has anyone experienced this, no what the cause is, or is something fixing to break?

I have AH but when I hit the console buton I just get the AH Disengaged message and the associated caption on the dash.

Maybe someone witha 98 with just TCS will chime up but I wouldn't have expected the failure message.

Can;t help you if you don't provide the model year and the codes you are seeing.

According to your forum name, I assume you have a 1998. Some late 1998's came with Active Handling. Now, if you have Active Handling, Active Handling and Traction Control combine to give you a feature called Competitive Driving. What that is, is Active Handling still operable but Traction Control turned off. To test to see if you have Active Handling on your car, hold the center console button down for at least five seconds, while the car is stopped. If you do, Competitve Driving will come on the DIC, and the alarm modes on the dash will go off. With Traction Control off, and Active Handling still on, the car gives you a safety net. Spin your tires, and play, all you want, but if the car gets out of line, the computer will assist you in regaining control by ABSing selected wheels as determined by several parameters fed into the Active Handling system.
Now, if you do indeed have Active Handling, since you have a 1998, you have Generation 1. This is the same system, optional, on 1998-2000 Corvettes. 2001-2004 C5s have Generation 2 Active Handling which came stock, at no charge, is a little less intrusive and allows Competitive Driving to be initiated in a moving vehicle. Generation 1 requires the vehicle to be stopped at the moment of time out (5-6 seconds) though the car can be moving prior to that time. In other words, if you were driving in normal mode, you could be coasting up to a stop sign while depressing the activation button, and, it would enter Competitive Driving, so long as you were at a dead stop at the moment of timeout.
One more thing, about Generation 1 Active Handling, is that you cannot brake-torque with it in service. The engine will downpower at about 1200 rpms. In order to brake-torque, you must turn the system off. Generation 2 will allow you to brake-torque with Active Handling in service.

Pull the codes from the DIC and post them. Are any of them EBCM or wheel sensor related?

If it says "Traction Control", and not, "Active Handling", next to the console button, then your car does not have the Active Handling option and I concur with looking at the codes and posting them on the forum. Your dash indications sounded like what happens with a quick press of the console button on cars with Active Handling. The one button controls both Traction Control and Active Handling. Good luck, I hope you get to the bottom of it.
Note: Also, I would suggest that you carry a pad and pen in the car and write down what the dash indications are telling you. That way you have the clear skinny on what the car is trying to tell you.

Maybe this is too obvious here, but it would seem since your dealer has apparently diagnosed your "same problem" enough to estimate parts and labor, that you could help him by sharing the specifics of what they say the problem is.

BTW: Welcome to the Forum. I see you signed up yesterday and this was your first post.

If it only happens when you "have a little fun" with the TC off, then this may be "normal."

As in, you are doing burnouts or donuts and such. Then you hit the brakes while doing it, and the system gets pissed off due to excessive wheelspin during braking, etc. Its mad because you are still on the throttle with the brakes on and wheels spinning, when the computer trys to control the spinnage (ABS is always on) and it cant.

If I turn mine off (2001) and drive in reverse and try to do a "Rockford" , it gets pissed off too and the light comes on till I cycle the key.
