Traction Control Probs

Maybe someone witha 98 with just TCS will chime up but I wouldn't have expected the failure message.
Now, if you do indeed have Active Handling, since you have a 1998, you have Generation 1. This is the same system, optional, on 1998-2000 Corvettes. 2001-2004 C5s have Generation 2 Active Handling which came stock, at no charge, is a little less intrusive and allows Competitive Driving to be initiated in a moving vehicle. Generation 1 requires the vehicle to be stopped at the moment of time out (5-6 seconds) though the car can be moving prior to that time. In other words, if you were driving in normal mode, you could be coasting up to a stop sign while depressing the activation button, and, it would enter Competitive Driving, so long as you were at a dead stop at the moment of timeout.
One more thing, about Generation 1 Active Handling, is that you cannot brake-torque with it in service. The engine will downpower at about 1200 rpms. In order to brake-torque, you must turn the system off. Generation 2 will allow you to brake-torque with Active Handling in service.

Note: Also, I would suggest that you carry a pad and pen in the car and write down what the dash indications are telling you. That way you have the clear skinny on what the car is trying to tell you.

As in, you are doing burnouts or donuts and such. Then you hit the brakes while doing it, and the system gets pissed off due to excessive wheelspin during braking, etc. Its mad because you are still on the throttle with the brakes on and wheels spinning, when the computer trys to control the spinnage (ABS is always on) and it cant.
If I turn mine off (2001) and drive in reverse and try to do a "Rockford"
, it gets pissed off too and the light comes on till I cycle the key.
