Default New column lock question...

God - I hope it's new after saying that. Anyway, I did search and read what I could find.

I have a 2003 MN6 and the column lock recall has been done. I got my vette out of storage today after jump starting it. After about 1.5 hours of driving the "service steering column lock" came on. From my reading, this likely has something to do with the jump start/low voltage. I thought that vettes of this vintage shouldn't be driveable with this condition. Mine seems to drive fine. Also, am I correct in my understanding that this condition will correct itself once the battery gets charged up? How long should that take? It was a brand new battery last October just before going into storage (I had the starter replaced at that time too).

Thanks and sorry if I missed this info somewhere.

I've been reading up on this but mine just did the same thing. (2000 A4) The recall has been done and my wheel is not locked but it won't drive more than a couple feet. Is there an easy fix? It says "service column lock" still but I can move the wheel. The recall has already been done.

Can I still install a CLB or does it have to be back to normal before I install a CLB? Help!

If you had the latest recall where the locking plate was removed and the K harness and relay were installed, have the dealer remove the relay. I had the same problem and the relays are the reason. Since they removed it everything is fine with my 99 MN6

The Service Bulletin you want is number 04006C. This is the one that removes the lockplate. If you want a PDF to print and bring to your dealer, please PM me with your email and I'll send it too you. All previous recalls-service bulletins were useless, and unsafe.

The recall that Jemnnifer's referring to is just the latest in a series of attempts by GM to fix the colomn lock. The fact that they've not yet fixed it may give a clue. If the latest one removes the plate at least it gets rid of the dangerous part. I'm not sure whether it will prevent the fuel cut off though. Call me cynical but......

I'm just eternally thankful that I have an 02 A4 with no lock. That said, if I did have one I'd have fitted the CLB years ago.

Looking at my paperwork it seems as though the plate was removed and a new harness installed. My wheel is not locked but the fuel shutoff is still active. So now my wheel isn't locked but I can't drive without the car shutting down. Will the CLB fix the fuel shutdown function?

Both GM recalls were done on my '97 and I installed the CLB after I bought it from another forum member last year. This being said, I still get the "Pull Key and Wait 10 Seconds" message and the fuel cut-off still functions if I ignore the 10 second message. It is a minor inconvenience, however, our car has the memory option and having to pull the key so many times is putting a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on our power seat motors. You would think that a decent engineer and/or computer programmer could have avoided these problems. Why the computer program wasn't written to recognize the ignition key and realize that the car ISN'T being stolen is beyond my comprehension.

Hmmm.... So you are saying if you actually wait 10 seconds or more and pull the key you are able to start the car and drive it without the service column lock message coming on?

Here's what happens to me, is this "normal"? I had the recalls done as well.: I get the "pull key, wait 10 seconds" message.... I pull the key and wait.... then I put the key back in and the "service column lock" message comes on and I cannot drive the car because the fuel shut-off is engaged. It sounds like the CLB won't really help me then??

Since this subject came up, now that my car is out of warranty, I got worried again. No lockups ever yet. My 2004 M6 has had the recall done which states reprogram computer only. I called the dealer that did this, they claimed they did exactly what my invoice says. No plate out or harness ever put in. So, I did what the guys here told me to do. Order the CLB from Corvettes of Houston. Great guys to talk to. They said, get it in asap. If for any reason I find a harness in there, where their CLB would be installed, take it out and throw it as far away as possible. Computer reprogram should not affect this upgrade. I hope all goes well when I get it and I can drive ok without gas shutoff problems...Does anyone know with my history of doing all this if I will?
