I've been showing and judging for 40 years; mostly NCCC. I prefer a judged show to a "Peoples Choice". My Vettes have always been clean and stock. Therefore if I enter a Peoples Choice I will never win because the Vettes with "bling and wings" will win. So you have a choice whether you want to go with bling and mods to atract the voters or go for strickly clean/stock for the judges eyes. But the main thing is the fun while at the event. The friends I've garnered over the years far outweigh the trophys. Go either way, but have fun
Do the mods that will increase your enjoyment of your car. Then go to the shows to meet other "car" people. I don't think it matters very much one way or another as to whether to do performance or appearance mods. Judging tends to be very uneven at a lot of these events. On any given weekend, you can win something one day, and the very next day not get a second glance.
They are fun as long as you don't take them too serious.
If you're trophy hunting, the C5 guys with the most bolt-on bobbles usually do better at "Peoples Choice" shows. And good taste has nothing to do with it.
We do alot of the ISCA judged shows allover the half of the country. I would say these are the best judged shows in the country. They have a group of professional judges that do a temendous job. They look for clean, clean, clean, and on the mods they look for the difficulty of the modification, and also attention to detail. For those who are not sure what an ISCA Show is, these are the World of Wheels, Autorama Shows, etc. I like the professionally judged over the participating judged show because they are more fair. With the participating judged show if you get someone who comes in with a car and belongs to a car club and has 15 buddies with him you are already down 15 votes because all his buddies in the car club vote for him. Not the best car always win these type of shows.
In a "real" show? Cleanliness get the most points, then fit and finish. Mods have nothing to do with a real pointed show. If the show is judge in-class the correct way a C5 will be judged as if it came off the factory floor. Cleanliness is key, that I have found that out over the past 15 years of shows.
Now if it is a audience judged show then I'd say the more bling the better.
My car is 100% stock and I have won in the C5 Street class a few times my car is clean clean clean. Even the smell of the car will throw some judges off.
Bottom line, the show needs to be judged by people who know how to judge. Most "good" judged shows will tell you up front what guidelines they use.

If you go to the same show all the time and have a great competive car, it is likely that no matter how clean, how many mods you have, or how original the car, the judges sort of pass around the hardware. I have been to several shows where I won a first place and the next year didn't even get a look.

All the shows Ive been to that judge, the points are based on how clean your car is. (ie. dirt, rock chips, etc.) They always put you in different categories based on your mods though but you were still judged on how clean your car was. Dont forget to clean around the gas cap, that is one of the main areas the judges check for.
In the end, the people you meet and the friendships you make will far outweigh any awards. Fix the Vette the way that makes you the most happy.
However, it is amazing that most "Show and Shines" do not have enough classes to better represent the number of modded cars that do show up for display. Therefore, implementing more classes would create more winners (and, hopefully, reduce biases), as well as, inspire more enthusiasts to attend. In fact, I remember attending a show at a well known Race Track, whereby, an individual won whom only had a stretchy bra over the front bumper of their stock Corvette. And, there were a number of outstandingly modified Vettes present and accounted for including a custom Lingenfelter corvette, and other amazing supercharged, and, turbocharged vettes with custom interior and exterior modifications. Regardless, enjoy the opportunity to "meet and greet" new friends with Vettes!
in a judged show the cleaner the car wins unless their is
politics envolved. in a non judged show it is how popular
you are or how many members of your club show up
but you should go to shows have a good time and meet people
most corvette people are really nice and can give you helpful
advice on your car

Well said. Been to many shows the past couple of years and in many no matter what level your car, you will not win every time or any time. Many "winners" are picked by who they know, what club they are from and who their friends and enemies are. Have fun no matter what, there are many great Corvette people out there. ENJOY!!
