Default Ohhh the humanity!

Actually, I'm fortunate to have nothing worse than a sore neck and a headache. I'm minding my own business at the traffic light less than two hours ago, sitting still, when all of a sudden I hear a sound like a car door slam, and then whap!, my car suddenly takes a lurch forward. I am glad I didn't hit the guy in front of me, both for his or her sake, and also for my car's sake. Two cars behind me, a guy (name withheld) with about nine hours sleep in the last three days was stretching in the seat of his Hyundai Sonata when his boot slipped off the brake pedal and nailed the accelerator. This chain of events knocked a Honda Odyssey into my car, and I am guesstimating the impact with my car was somewhere between 3 and 4mph. Needless to say, I'm upset.

I'm curious if there is any structure damage to look for. The license plate frame on the Odyssey sticks out several inches, and it is obvious where it hit. To the left, on the other side of the exhaust pipes, is a scratch, and there were black marks from the bra on the Odyssey there until the guy started rubbing them off with his finger. There is still a little bit of black left, but not much on that side. I noticed polished marks on the Ti exhaust tips from where the cover apparently deformed, came down and rubbed on them. Upon close inspection, I noticed a scratch higher up on the left, but I can't see how that would be connected.

What I am wondering about is if the Odyssey license plate deformed my urethane cover enough to allow the Odyssey bra to contact my car, then what gave way underneath the cover? My hands are still shaking from the adrenaline. I haven't been in an accident in over 14 years, and even then it was a deer versus my wife's Monte Carlo SS.

We got a police report, and the guy took full responsibility. I called my insurance, but they were already gone for the day.

Thanks for listening,
Tim Glover

Main damage

You can see the scratch, and faint black marks from the bra.

That stinks, glad you are okay. Same thing happened to my hubby's C6 a few months ago. It was fixed and looks good as new.

You called your insurance company and they were gone for the day? Change companies.

I would get a new bumper and not allow them to use any filler on it. Sometimes on rear collisions the fiberglass "tub" where you trunk is may be cracked. That would be somethong to look for but I doubt if your was hit hard enough to crack it.

Do they still use the bead board cushion behind the bumper cover like they used to? If so, that will have to be replaced.

I just looked at the time stamp, and it must be central. It was about 5:45 EST when it happened, so I didn't think anyone would be there anyway. Curious about the insurance. I thought you always had to involve your own company, even if it wasn't your fault.

Thanks,
Tim Glover

P.S., Silverbullet00, I've tried polishing the tips before, but have never really gotten any luster out of them. May I ask what polish you use?

Sorry to hear about that. You did the right thing. Let your insurance company deal with the other company. Then you can get it fixed at a good body shop. They will/should remove the entire rear, repair and paint. They will also check for any structural damage...not likely. I have seen this happen twice It's a pain for you to deal with but you'll get a "new" rear bumper. Good luck!

On the bright side (if there is one), if you had to get hit, that was the best place to absorb the impact - that is what it was designed to handle.

Good to hear that you weren't hurt more seriously than that. Good luck with the car - a good body shop will be able to check for any additional frame damage, etc.

His insurance company may be open on Sat, if so, contact them and ensure you file a report. This happen to me once, where the lady turned left, then right, then a U-Turn from the right lane on a 3 lane road. I T-Boned her good, on a Friday afternoon. Although she admitted fault, cop would not issue her a ticket, saying its up to our insurance companies to fight it out. WTF? Goes to show not all cops have brains. Anyways, by Monday she changed her mind and said I was speeding and she was trying to get out of my way and I hit her. To make a long story short, I happen to have 2 witness phone numbers and they vouched for me saying the lady was an idiot. Anyways, important note here: make sure his insurance company admits fault and willing to step up. And get it replaced not puttied.
Good luck and watch where you're backing up next time!!!

Always get a police report.

Sorry to hear, actually just had that happen to me a little while back. It's a horrible feeling, but it'll be alright. I actually felt like crying...
